CUTTING OUT
ONCE POSITIONED AND PRESSED IN PLACE ON YOUR QUILT TOP YOU CAN FINISH THE ORANGE PEEL SHAPES WITH A SIMPLE STRAIGHT STITCH – EASY PEASY!
1 Cut the fusible web into sixteen (16) 8in x 15in strips. 2 Cut both the background and backing fabric into two (2) equal lengths.
3 Cut the binding fabric into six (6) 2 in x WOF strips.
PREPARING THE APPLIQUÉ SHAPES
4 Trace around Template A six times onto each piece of fusible web, drawing onto the backing paper.
5 Fuse one piece of fusible web to the back of each of the sixteen fabric fat eighths.
ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP
6 Cut Template along A your shapes drawn from lines eachto makefat eighth, six for a total of ninety-six (96). You will need ninety (90) so discard six. Remove papers from the back of each shape.
7 Remove selvages from the background fabric and sew the two pieces together along the long sides. Trim the background piece square (it should be approximately 54in square).
8 Fold the background fabric in half and press a line marking the centre fold of the quilt – you will use this when positioning the Template A pieces.
9 Print and cut out Template B – this will be used as a guide when positioning the Template A pieces. 10 Lay the background fabric out flat. Place the first six Template A pieces along the pressed centre fold line on the quilt top, right sides up, leaving about 3in at both the top and bottom ( Fig 1). You may wish to pin these shapes in place as you go.
11 Using Template B as a guide, place the next row of Template A pieces in place as shown ( Fig 2). The points of each Template A piece should match the points of the triangle. 12 Continue to build up the design using Template B as a guide, until you have the whole quilt top laid out ( Fig 3).
13 Fuse all the orange peel shapes to the background by pressing in place, following manufacturers instructions.
14 Secure each orange peel shape in place by stitching along the edge using a blanket, zigzag or straight stitch.
