PIECING THE BLOCK

6

Foundation paper piece the four HST templates, pairing each orange print with a pale grey print 6½in square and each blue with a dark grey 6½in square. Follow steps 7-9 below.

7

With the 6½in squares RST, pin to the reverse of one paper template with the lighter fabric next to the paper. Make sure the fabric covers all the lines on the template plus ¼in all the way around.

8

Shorten your machine stitch to 1.5 and sew along all of the red lines. Cut the template and fabric along all the black lines using a rotary cutter and quilt ruler. Trim off the corners on each triangle along the green lines.

9

10

Sew together your HSTs in four (4) pairs of blue/dark grey and six (6) pairs of orange/pale grey (Fig 1). Press seams to one side.

11 From the blue print cut sixteen (16) 1in x 2½in strips and two (2) 6½in squares. Press each HST unit open. Remove the paper from the back of each HST unit. Sew together the following sets of strips, pressing seams to one side: Eight sets of two blue 1in x 2½in strips with one central dark grey 1½in x 2½in strip.

Eight sets of two pale grey 1in x 2 in strips with one berry print 1 in x 2 in strip in the centre. Four sets of two pale grey 1in x 4 in strips with one berry print 1 in x 4 in strip in the centre (Fig 2).

12

Lay out your units and remaining fabric squares in rows and sew together (Fig 3). Note that when joining two of the stripe units end to end, you can turn one of the units so that the seams nest. Press the seams for each row in alternating directions.

13

Sew all seven rows of the block together following the Layout Diagram, carefully matching the seams to finish your block (see layout diagram opposite). In a hurry? Turn the page for Lynne’s alternative remix of this jazzy retro block – quicker and easier in a contrasting colourscheme. Get into the groove...
