NOTES
All seam allowances are ¼in, unless otherwise noted. RST = right sides together. WST = wrong sides together. For templates, see p89.
PIECING THE BACKGROUND
1Take the low-volume print squares and arrange them into six rows of five squares each. Join the squares into rows, pressing the seams of each row in alternate directions. Join the rows to complete the background fabric section.
ADDING THE APPLIQUÉ SHAPES
2Trace the Ice Cream, Cone and Cone Shadow templates onto the paper side of the fusible webbing. Cut out each one roughly. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the shapes onto the wrong side of their corresponding fabric as follows: Fuse the Ice Cream shape onto the pink fabric. Fuse the Cone shape onto the light brown fabric. Fuse the Cone Shadow shape onto the medium brown fabric. Carefully cut out each of the shapes, using the templates.
3Take the Cone piece. Position it onto the background fabric section, referring to the photo for placement then, following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse it in place. Repeat to fuse the Cone Shadow and the Ice Cream pieces on top of the Cone.
4Stitch around the raw edges of the pieces to appliqué them in place.
ADDING THE EMBROIDERY
5Transfer the embroidery pattern onto the appliqué shapes using the method of your choice – Felice recommends using either a light box and a water-soluble pen or transfer paper.
6Stitch the details by hand on the appliqué pieces – Felice recommends using two or three strands of embroidery floss for this. Use satin stitch for the kitty’s eyes and nose, and backstitch for everything else.
QUILTING AND FINISHING
7Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.
8Quilt as desired. Felice free-motion quilted a swirly design on the background fabric section.
9Keeping the appliqué design centred, use the Background template to trim the quilt sandwich into an oval shape.
10From the binding fabric, cut 2 in wide strips on the bias to make a strip with a total length of approx 40in. Sew the strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams to make one binding strip.
11Fold the binding strip in half along the length, WST, and press. Line up the raw edges of the quilt front and the binding and then sew in place all the way around, easing the binding gently around the curve. Join the ends neatly.
12Fold the binding to the back of the quilt and then hand stitch the binding to back of the quilt to finish.
