PROJECT VARIATIONS:
• Use patterned fabric on one side and plain on the other. • Add bobble trim to the outside of each triangle. • Add fusible appliqués to the bunting triangles to spell out a name, ‘Happy Birthday’ or ‘Congratulations’. • Bring the bunting inside! Make it in colours to match your bedroom, nursery or another room.
STEP 1: Place two matching or contrasting fabrics right sides together and pin in place. Draw around the bunting triangle on the wrong side of one fabric.
STEP 2: Sew along the line down the two long sides only. Backstitch at the beginning and end of your line of stitching to secure.
STEP 3: Trim the fabric to within 0.5cm of your marked line on all three sides. Trim o the seam allowance at the point very close to the stitching line.
STEP 4: Turn the triangle through to the right side and push out the point with a point turner or chopstick. Press the triangle flat.
STEP 5 : Make as many triangles as you require. For each metre of bunting you will need approximately five finished triangles.
STEP 6:. If you are making your own binding, cut strips of fabric on the straight of grain, each 5cm wide. Join the strips end-to-end to the required length, then fold the strip in half and then the raw edges towards the centre fold, to make binding that is about 1cm wide.
STEP 7: Leaving a few inches of binding spare at the start, carefully sandwich a bunting triangle inside the fold of the binding and pin in place. Leave a gap of about 2.5cm and then repeat. Continue this process until you have used up all your triangles or binding.
STEP 8: Using a sewing machine, carefully sew along the bottom edge of the binding strip to hold all the bunting triangles in place. Sew about 3mm from the lower edge, making sure you catch both sides of the binding.
