NOTES

Seam allowances are ¼in, unless otherwise noted. RST = right sides together. QST = Quarter-square Triangle. WOF = width of fabric. WST = wrong sides together.

FABRICS USED

Solid fabrics are Iron and White from the Kona Cotton Solids collection by Robert Kaufman.

CUTTING OUT

1 From the solid grey fabric cut: Four (4) 3in x WOF strips. Subcut into fifty-six (56) 3in squares. Two (2) 3½in x WOF strips. Subcut one strip into twelve (12) 3½in squares. Subcut the remaining strip into seven (7) 3½in squares and six (6) 3in squares. Cut each 3½in square in half diagonally to give thirty-eight (38) edging triangles. Two (2) 7in x WOF strips. Five (5) 2¼in x WOF strips for binding.

2 From the solid white fabric cut five (5) 3in x WOF strips. Subcut into sixty-six (66) 3in squares.

3 Take the 4in blue/green and 4in red/pink fabric squares. Cut each one along both diagonals to give four (4) QSTs from each square (Fig A). You need fifty blue/green QSTs so will have two QSTs left over. You need sixty-six red/pink QSTs so will have two QSTs left over.

PLANNING THE QST BLOCKS

4 Take four QSTs and arrange them into square blocks as desired. Repeat to make a total of: Twelve (12) blue/green blocks.

Sixteen (16) red/pink blocks. One (1) blue/green/red/pink block.

PIECING THE QST BLOCKS

5 Once you’re happy with the layout of your QSTs, take the four QSTs for one block. Sew adjacent QSTs together in pairs to make two half-blocks (Fig B).

6 Join the two half-blocks along their long diagonal edges to complete one QST block (Fig C). Press and trim the block to 3in square, making sure that the seams run diagonally to each corner.

7 Repeat steps 5–6 to piece the remaining QST blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT

8 Take the following: Twenty-nine (29) QST blocks. Sixty-six (66) 3in white squares. Sixty-two (62) 3in grey squares. Thirty-eight (38) grey edging triangles. Arrange them as shown (Layout diagram).

9 Join the units into diagonal rows and then join the rows to complete the quilt top centre. Press.

10 Square up the quilt top centre, leaving a ¼in seam allowance all around.

11 Measure from the outer top edge of the quilt top to the outer bottom edge, along the centre. Take the 7in x WOF grey strips and trim each one to this length. The height of the quilt should be approx 39¾in.

12 Sew the grey strips to each side of the quilt top centre.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

13 Remove the selvedges from the backing fabric and press well.

14 Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

15 Quilt as desired. Lou quilted straight diagonal lines approx ¼in apart.

16 Trim off excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

17 Join the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears, then fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.

18 Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner, then fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
