Turn simple pieced units into a tonal checkerboard border

YOU WILL NEED

Medium blue print: ¼yd Light blue print: one (1) fat eighth Medium peach print: ¼yd Light peach print: one (1) fat eighth Medium pink print: ¼yd Light pink print: one (1) fat eighth Medium turquoise print: ¼yd Light turquoise print: one (1) fat eighth Background fabric: ¾yd

Border 2: 6in x 42in approx each side

NOTES

Seam allowances are ¼in, unless otherwise noted. Press all seams open, unless otherwise instructed. Match the shade of your medium and light print fabrics in Border 2 to the medium and light print fabrics in Border 1.

FABRICS USED

All fabrics are by Cotton+Steel. CUTTING OUT 1 From each of the medium prints cut a total of: Four (4) 3½in squares for Unit A. Thirty-two (32) 2in squares for Unit B. Forty (40) 1½in squares for Unit B.

2 From each of the light prints, fussy cut one (1) 6½in square for Unit A.

3 From each of the light blue and light pink prints cut eight (8) 3½in squares for Unit A.

4 From the background fabric cut: Four (4) 6½in squares for Unit A. Thirty-two (32) 3½in squares for Unit B. One hundred and twenty-eight (128) 1½in squares for Unit B.

PIECING UNIT A

5 Take four medium pink print 3½in squares. On the wrong side of each one mark a diagonal line from corner to corner.

6 Take the light pink 6½in print square and place it right side up. Right side down, place a 3½in square on two opposite corners, with the marked lines running from outer edge to outer edge of the large square. Stitch on the marked line (Fig A).

7 Trim ¼in beyond the stitched lines, then flip the corners open and press (Fig B).

8 Repeat steps 5–7 for the remaining two corners to complete one Corner Unit A (Fig C).

9 Repeat steps 5–8 with the remaining medium print 3½in squares and light print 6½in squares to make one Corner Unit A of each colour.

10 Repeat steps 5–8 with the light blue and light pink print 3½in squares and the 6½in background squares to make two of light blue Unit A and two of light pink Unit A.

PIECING UNIT B

11 Take the following: Eight (8) medium blue print 2in squares. Ten (10) medium blue print 1½in squares. Two (2) 3½in background squares. Eight (8) 1½in background squares.

12 Repeat steps 5–8 with the 2in print squares and the 3½in background squares to make a total of two square-in-a-square units.

13 Take four of the 1½in background squares and five of the 1½in print squares. Arrange into three rows of three squares each as shown. Join the squares into rows (Fig D). Join the rows to complete one nine-patch unit (Fig E).

14 Repeat step 13 to make a second nine-patch unit.

15 Arrange the square-in-a-square units and the nine-patch units into two rows of two as shown. Join into rows and then join the rows to complete one medium blue Unit B (Fig F).

16 Repeat steps 11–15 with the remaining medium print squares to make the following units: Four (4) of medium blue Unit B Four (4) of medium peach Unit B. Four (4) of medium pink Unit B. Four (4) of medium turquoise Unit B.

MAKING AND ADDING THE BORDERS

17 To make the left-hand border, take the following: One (1) light pink Unit A. Two (2) of medium peach Unit B. Two (2) of medium pink Unit B. Arrange as shown and then join into a row (Fig 1).

18 To make the right-hand border, take the following: One (1) light blue Unit A. Two (2) of medium blue Unit B. Two (2) of medium turquoise Unit B. Arrange as shown and then join into a row (Fig 2).

19 To make the top border, take the following: One (1) peach Corner Unit A. One (1) blue Corner Unit A. One (1) light blue Unit A. Two (2) of medium turquoise Unit B.

Two (2) of medium blue Unit B. Arrange as shown and then join into a row (Fig 3).

20 To make the bottom border, take the following: One (1) pink Corner Unit A. One (1) turquoise Corner Unit A. One (1) light pink Unit A. Two (2) of medium pink Unit B. Two (2) of medium peach Unit B. Arrange as shown and then join into a row (Fig 4).

21 Take the centre block and Border 1 from last issue. Join the four Border 2 pieces as shown to complete the second border section (Layout diagram).
