■ Fab­ric A (low vol­ume): 1yd

■ Fab­ric B (or­ange): ½yd

■ Fab­ric C (grey): ½yd

■ Back­ground fab­ric: 3yds

■ Back­ing fab­ric: 3½yds

■ Bat­ting: 60in square

■ Bind­ing fab­ric: ½yd

■ One (1) each of the Block 7 and Block 9 FPP Tem­plates

■ Four (4) copies of the Block 8 FPP Tem­plate

to the top and bot­tom to com­plete Block 1 (Fig 1).

Take one Fab­ric A 6in square and cut it in half di­ag­o­nally to give two (2) triangles. Place the triangles RST and then join them along the di­ag­o­nal to make one Fab­ric A HST. Trim to 5½in square. Re­peat to make a to­tal of three Fab­ric A HSTs.

Place one Fab­ric C 6in square and one back­ground 6in square RST, then mark a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of the Fab­ric C square. Sew along the line, then trim ¼in from the line and press open. Trim the unit to 5½in square to com­plete one Fab­ric C/back­ground HST.

Take the HSTs and join them into a four-patch unit as shown. Join a

4½in x 10½in back­ground strip to each side, then join a 4½in x 18½in back­ground strip to the top and bot­tom to com­plete Block 2 (Fig 2). 12

Re­peat step 9 to make one Fab­ric A HST, then re­peat step 10 to make a to­tal of three Fab­ric B/back­ground HSTs.

Re­peat step 11 to join the HSTs and add the back­ground strips, ar­rang­ing them as shown,to com­plete Block 3 (Fig 3).

Take one Fab­ric A 3in square and one back­ground 3in square. On the wrong side of each, mark a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner.

RST, place the Fab­ric A square on the right hand side of the 5½in x 3in Fab­ric C strip, with the di­ag­o­nal line run­ning from the bot­tom cor­ner to the mid­dle of the top edge. Stitch along the marked line and then them ¼in be­yond the stitched line. Flip the cor­ner open and press the seam to­wards Fab­ric A. Re­peat with the back­ground fab­ric square on the op­po­site cor­ner to make one FG unit (Fig 4).

Re­peat steps 14–15, this time plac­ing the Fab­ric A and back­ground squares on the op­po­site cor­ners, to make a sec­ond FG unit.

Re­peat step 10 to make two Fab­ric C/back­ground HSTs.

Take the HSTs and the FG units and join them into a unit as shown. Join a

4½in x 8in back­ground strip to each side, then join a 5¾in x 18½in back­ground strip to the top and bot­tom to com­plete Block 4 (Fig 5).

Re­peat step 9 with 5in squares to make two Fab­ric A HSTs. Trim each HST to

4½in square.

Re­peat step 10 us­ing 5in squares to make two Fab­ric A/B HSTs and two Fab­ric B/back­ground HSTs. Trim each HST to 4½in square.

Take the HSTs and join them into a unit as shown. Join a 5½in x 12½in back­ground strip to each side, then join a 3½in x 18½in back­ground strip to the top and bot­tom to com­plete Block 5 (Fig 6).

Re­peat step 9 with 5in squares to make four Fab­ric A HSTs. Trim the HSTs to 4½in square.

Take the HSTs and join them into a unit as shown. Add a 5½in x 8½in back­ground strip to each side, then join a 5½in x 18½in back­ground strip to the top and bot­tom to com­plete Block 6 (Fig 7). 24

Take one Block 7 Sec­tion A FPP tem­plate and the Sec­tion A1 fab­ric piece. Place the fab­ric right side up on the un­printed side of the tem­plate against Sec­tion A1. En­sure that the fab­ric cov­ers the whole sec­tion, plus at least ¼in all round. Pin in place. 25

Place the Sec­tion A2 fab­ric piece right side down on top of the Sec­tion A1 fab­ric piece, match­ing up the raw edges on the side where Sections A1 and A2 will be joined and mak­ing sure that when folded back along the seam line, Sec­tion A2 will be cov­ered by the fab­ric plus at least ¼in all round. Pin in place.

Turn the tem­plate over to the printed side and stitch along the marked line be­tween Sections A1 and A2, back­stitch­ing at the be­gin­ning and end of the seam. Fold the tem­plate away from the seam and trim to ¼in. Fold the tem­plate back, turn the work to the fab­ric side, flip Sec­tion A2 open and then press.

Re­peat steps 24–26 to piece the re­main­ing sections on the Block 7 Sec­tion A FPP tem­plate in nu­mer­i­cal or­der. Re­peat to piece the Block 7 Sections B and C tem­plates. Trim on the dot­ted seam al­lowance line and re­move the tem­plates.

Take the three pieced sections and join them as shown (Fig 8). Join a

43/ 8in x 10¾in back­ground fab­ric strip to each side, then join a 43/ 8in x 18½in back­ground fab­ric strip to the top and bot­tom to com­plete Block 7.

Re­peat steps 24–27 with the Block 8 FPP tem­plates and fab­ric pieces. Join the four pieced sections as shown (Fig 9). Join a 43/ 8in x 10¾in back­ground fab­ric strip to each side, then join a 43/ 8in x 18½in back­ground fab­ric strip to the top and bot­tom to com­plete Block 8.

Re­peat steps 24–27 with the Block 9 FPP tem­plates and fab­ric pieces. Join the five pieced sections as shown (Fig 10). Join a 4½in x 10½in back­ground fab­ric strip to each side, then join a 4½in x 18½in back­ground fab­ric strip to the top and bot­tom to com­plete Block 9.

Take Blocks 1–9 and ar­range them into three rows of three blocks each, re­fer­ring to the photo for place­ment. Join them into rows, then join the rows to com­plete the quilt top.
