to the top and bottom to complete Block 1 (Fig 1).

9

Take one Fabric A 6in square and cut it in half diagonally to give two (2) triangles. Place the triangles RST and then join them along the diagonal to make one Fabric A HST. Trim to 5½in square. Repeat to make a total of three Fabric A HSTs.

10

Place one Fabric C 6in square and one background 6in square RST, then mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the Fabric C square. Sew along the line, then trim ¼in from the line and press open. Trim the unit to 5½in square to complete one Fabric C/background HST.

11

Take the HSTs and join them into a four-patch unit as shown. Join a

4½in x 10½in background strip to each side, then join a 4½in x 18½in background strip to the top and bottom to complete Block 2 (Fig 2). 12

Repeat step 9 to make one Fabric A HST, then repeat step 10 to make a total of three Fabric B/background HSTs.

13

Repeat step 11 to join the HSTs and add the background strips, arranging them as shown,to complete Block 3 (Fig 3).

14

Take one Fabric A 3in square and one background 3in square. On the wrong side of each, mark a diagonal line from corner to corner.

15

RST, place the Fabric A square on the right hand side of the 5½in x 3in Fabric C strip, with the diagonal line running from the bottom corner to the middle of the top edge. Stitch along the marked line and then them ¼in beyond the stitched line. Flip the corner open and press the seam towards Fabric A. Repeat with the background fabric square on the opposite corner to make one FG unit (Fig 4).

16

Repeat steps 14–15, this time placing the Fabric A and background squares on the opposite corners, to make a second FG unit.

17

Repeat step 10 to make two Fabric C/background HSTs.

18

Take the HSTs and the FG units and join them into a unit as shown. Join a

4½in x 8in background strip to each side, then join a 5¾in x 18½in background strip to the top and bottom to complete Block 4 (Fig 5).

19 $

Repeat step 9 with 5in squares to make two Fabric A HSTs. Trim each HST to

4½in square.

20 $

Repeat step 10 using 5in squares to make two Fabric A/B HSTs and two Fabric B/background HSTs. Trim each HST to 4½in square.

21

Take the HSTs and join them into a unit as shown. Join a 5½in x 12½in background strip to each side, then join a 3½in x 18½in background strip to the top and bottom to complete Block 5 (Fig 6).

22

Repeat step 9 with 5in squares to make four Fabric A HSTs. Trim the HSTs to 4½in square.

23

Take the HSTs and join them into a unit as shown. Add a 5½in x 8½in background strip to each side, then join a 5½in x 18½in background strip to the top and bottom to complete Block 6 (Fig 7). 24

Take one Block 7 Section A FPP template and the Section A1 fabric piece. Place the fabric right side up on the unprinted side of the template against Section A1. Ensure that the fabric covers the whole section, plus at least ¼in all round. Pin in place. 25

Place the Section A2 fabric piece right side down on top of the Section A1 fabric piece, matching up the raw edges on the side where Sections A1 and A2 will be joined and making sure that when folded back along the seam line, Section A2 will be covered by the fabric plus at least ¼in all round. Pin in place.

26

Turn the template over to the printed side and stitch along the marked line between Sections A1 and A2, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Fold the template away from the seam and trim to ¼in. Fold the template back, turn the work to the fabric side, flip Section A2 open and then press.

27

Repeat steps 24–26 to piece the remaining sections on the Block 7 Section A FPP template in numerical order. Repeat to piece the Block 7 Sections B and C templates. Trim on the dotted seam allowance line and remove the templates.

28

Take the three pieced sections and join them as shown (Fig 8). Join a

43/ 8in x 10¾in background fabric strip to each side, then join a 43/ 8in x 18½in background fabric strip to the top and bottom to complete Block 7.

29

Repeat steps 24–27 with the Block 8 FPP templates and fabric pieces. Join the four pieced sections as shown (Fig 9). Join a 43/ 8in x 10¾in background fabric strip to each side, then join a 43/ 8in x 18½in background fabric strip to the top and bottom to complete Block 8.

30

Repeat steps 24–27 with the Block 9 FPP templates and fabric pieces. Join the five pieced sections as shown (Fig 10). Join a 4½in x 10½in background fabric strip to each side, then join a 4½in x 18½in background fabric strip to the top and bottom to complete Block 9.

31

Take Blocks 1–9 and arrange them into three rows of three blocks each, referring to the photo for placement. Join them into rows, then join the rows to complete the quilt top.
