PIECING THE HEART BLOCKS

1

Repeat steps 1–8 on p94–95 using the Heart Block FPP templates to piece six Heart blocks, trimming each one to 6½in square.

PIECING THE LEFT & RIGHT BIRD BLOCKS

2

Repeat steps 1–7 on p94–95 to piece one each of the Right Bird Block Sections A and B FPP templates. Leave the edges of the templates untrimmed (Fig A).

3

Pin the pieced Sections A and B together along diagonal edges, carefully matching up points along the bird body and edges of the block (Fig B). Susi also recommends basting them in place to make sure that your seam is correctly aligned.

4

Return your stitch length to its normal length for piecing. Sew the pinned Sections A and B together, then trim the seam allowance to 1/8in.

5

Open out the block and press, then trim around the outer dashed line of the paper templates – the block should now measure 6 in square. 6

Remove the templates to complete one Right Bird block (Fig C).

7

Embroider the eye of the bird. Add any other embroidered details as desired – Susi added musical notes (Fig D).

8

Repeat steps 2–7 to piece a total of two Right and two Left Bird blocks.

PIECING THE STANDING BIRD BLOCKS

9

Repeat steps 2–6 to piece the Standing Bird FPP templates, joining the bottom of Template A to the top of Template B. Repeat to make a total of two Standing Bird blocks.

PIECING THE ROW

10

Take the Heart, Bird and Standing Bird blocks and arrange them into a row, alternating them as shown (Fig 1). Join the blocks together to complete Row 1, pressing seams open.
