CUTTING OUT

1

From the green fabric cut sixteen (16)

4in squares.

2

From the low volume fabric cut sixteen

(16) 4in squares and thirty-two (32)

3½in squares.

3

From the backing fabric cut one (1)

30in square and two (2) 6in squares.

4

From the binding fabric, cut three (3)

2½in x WOF strips.

MAKING THE HSTS

5

On the wrong side of all 4in green squares, mark a diagonal line from corner to corner.

6

Pair each green square RST with a 4in low volume square. Stitch ¼in away from the line on each side – chain piece to make the process faster (Fig 1).

7

Cut along the marked line on each set of squares (see Fig 2). Flip open the HSTs and press the seams toward the print (Fig 3). Trim each of the thirty-two (32) HSTs to 3½in square.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

8

Arrange the HSTs and the 3½in low volume squares into eight rows of eight squares, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement.

CHOOSE A MIXTURE OF LOW VOLUME PRINTS TO ADD TEXTURE TO YOUR BACKGROUND

9

Sew the squares into rows, pressing the seams of each row in alternate directions. Sew the rows together, nesting the seams. Press the seams open.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

10

Make a quilt sandwich by layering the backing, batting and quilt top. Baste the layers using your preferred method.

11

Quilt as desired. Alyce used green thread and a free-motion quilting foot to quilt a curvy leaf-like design through the green HSTs, and off-white thread and a walking foot to outline and echo the on-point square shape inside and out of the HSTs.

12

Fold the two 6in backing fabric squares in half, on the diagonal, wrong-sides together, and press. Place one in each top corner on the back of the quilt, aligning raw edges with raw edges of the quilt. Baste. 13

Join the binding strips end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold the strip in half lengthwise wrong-sides together, and press. 14

Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and machine-stitch or neatly slipstitch in place.
