If you find yourself bewildered by the range of pre-cuts on offer, don’t worry. Precut fabrics open up a world of irresistible colour matched delights ideal for your next project.

Cost effective, compact and beautiful, they come in handy sizes that can easily be cut down even further into the ideal piecing shapes. Fat quarters measuring 18in x 22in are the most popular, while Fat Eighths measuring 9in x 22in are ideal for dinky items and shapes. Buy these and the fat quarters in delicious, rainbow-hued stacks or bundles. Long quarters, aka thin quarters, are far narrower cuts best suited to strip piecing, borders and binding. Jelly rolls, named by fabric company Moda for their resemblance to jam-filled Swiss rolls, take things down even further with 42 strips each measuring 2in x 42in. They’re fab for placemats, coasters and other small makes. Moda also came up with Charm Packs of 5in x 5in squares featuring tasters of every print in a collection, Mini Charm Packs (2.5in squares) and Layer Cakes (10in squares). Other companies have their own names for these cuts, but they're always a great opportunity to sample a collection!
