MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR FABRICS AND INCORPORATE THE COLOURS INTO THE BACKING AND BINDING

MAKING THE QUILT TOP

6

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each background 5in square.

7

Pair each rainbow 5in square with a white

5in square, right sides together. Sew ¼in from either side of the drawn line. Cut along the line, then press each unit open and trim to 4½in square, to complete your HST units.

8

To make the first block, arrange five blue HSTs, two turquoise HSTs and three aqua HSTs with two 4½in x 8½in background strips and one 8½in background square as shown (Fig 1). Piece the small squares together in pairs, and then join to the strips to make two columns. Sew the two columns together, matching seams.

9

Continue joining the pieces together, arranging each block as shown in the Layout Diagram.

10

Arrange the blocks in four rows of four, referring to the Layout Diagram and

photo for placement. Sew the blocks into rows, then sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.

PIECING THE BACK

11

Arrange your 4 in x 24 in strips in rainbow order. Sew together along the long edges. Then add the blue and purple

5in x 24 in strips to each end.

12

Cut your backing fabric in half lengthwise, to make two pieces approximately 22in x 90in. Sew these pieces to either side of the pieced rainbow strip from the previous step, centring the rainbow strip. 13

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

14

Quilt as desired. Susan used her walking foot to quilt wavy lines across the quilt in rainbow threads.

15

Trim the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

16

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.

17

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
