NOTES

■ Seam allowances are ¼in throughout, unless otherwise noted.

■ WOF = width of fabric.

■ RST = right sides together.

■ WST = wrong sides together.

■ HST = half-square triangle.

■ Templates include seam allowances.

■ For templates, see p88.

FABRICS USED

■ Kona Cotton in Snow, Pool and Chartreuse by Robert Kaufman.

CUTTING OUT

1

From the white fabric cut:

■ Thirty two (32) 4in squares. ■ Seven (7) 6½in x WOF strips. Fold each strip in half width-wise, and cut Template B half-triangles. Cutting the folded strip means half the pieces will be cut in reverse. You need sixty four (64) half-triangles and sixty four (64) reverse half-triangles.

2

From the blue fabric cut:

■ Sixty four (64) 6½in squares.

■ Thirty (30) 4in squares.

■ Six (6) 6½in x WOF strips. Subcut fifty six

(56) triangles using Template A.

■ Eight (8) 2½in x WOF strips for binding.

3

From the green fabric cut two (2)

4in squares and eight (8) triangles using Template A.

PIECING THE BLOCKS

4

Pair a white and blue 4in square RST. Draw a diagonal on the wrong side of

one square. Sew ¼in from either side of the line and trim along the line. Press open and trim to 3½in square to complete two HSTs.

5

Repeat the previous step, pairing each coloured 4in square with a white square. Make sixty blue HSTs and four green HSTs.

6

Arrange four matching HSTs, with the white triangles at the corners. Sew together as a four-patch (Fig 1). This completes one block centre. Make fifteen blue block centres and one green.

7

Piece one half-triangle and one reverse half-triangle to each side of all the blue and green triangles (Fig A). Make fifty six blue triangle blocks and eight green triangle blocks. Trim to 6½in square.

8

Arrange one block centre, four triangle blocks and four 6½in squares as shown. Sew the squares together in rows, then sew the rows together to complete one block (Fig 2). Make eleven of these blocks in blue.

9

Repeat the previous step to make one block using green triangles and centre (Fig 3). Then make four blocks using three blue triangles and one green triangle (Fig 4).

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

10

Arrange the blocks in four rows of four, referring to the photo for placement. Make sure to orient the green triangles correctly (refer to the photo on p78).

11

Sew the blocks together in rows, pressing seams to alternating sides. Then sew the rows together, nesting the seams. Press seams open or to one side.

FINISHING THE QUILT

12

Cut your backing in half along the width. Sew together along the long edges using a ½in seam. Press open.

13

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method. 14

Quilt as desired. Susan quilted a spiral from the centre of the green block. Trim the excess batting and backing level with the quilt top edges and square up the quilt.

15

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.

16

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
