CUTTING OUT

1

2

From Fabric B cut eight (8)

1¾in x 2¾in rectangles and eight (8)

1¾in x 5¼in rectangles.

3

4

From Fabric E cut sixteen (16) 4½in squares and four (4) 2½in squares.

5

From the background fabric cut:

■ Four (4) 5¼in squares.

■ Eight (8) 4½in squares.

■ Eight (8) 4½in x 8½in rectangles.

6

From the binding fabric cut three (3)

2¼in strips.

THIS PATTERN IS SO VERSATILE THAT THE FABRIC SELECTION CAN TRANSFORM THE WHOLE DESIGN

MAKING THE CENTER

7

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of all your Fabric D and E squares and the four 5¼in background squares.

8

Place a Fabric D 4½in square RST on opposite corners of the Fabric C square. Sew along each line and trim ¼in from the stitching. Press each corner open to complete two CSTs (Fig A). Repeat to add CSTs to the remaining corners (Fig B).

9

Using the four 2½in squares of Fabric E, repeat the previous step to add CSTs to the centre square again (Fig C). Press open to complete the centre block (Fig D).

MAKING THE CORNER UNITS

10

Sew a 1¾in x 2¾in Fabric B rectangle to either side of a Fabric A 2¾in square. Press open (Fig E). Sew a 1¾in x 5¼in Fabric B rectangle to either side of the unit and press open (Fig F).

11

Place a background fabric 5¼in square right sides together with the pieced unit you’ve just sewn. Sew ¼in from either side of your diagonal drawn line and cut along the line (Fig G). Press open to make two HST units.

12

Trim each unit to 4½in square, making sure to align the diagonal on your ruler with the seam, and keep the Fabric A triangle centred (Fig H).

13

Arrange the units with two background fabric 4½in squares, and sew together in a four-patch to make one corner unit (Fig I). Repeat to make a total of four corner units.

MAKING THE SIDE UNITS

14

Place a Fabric E 4 in square on one corner of a 4 in x 8 in background rectangle. Sew in place as before, to make a CST. Repeat on the opposite corner to complete one flying geese unit (Fig J).

15

Using two Fabric D 2 in squares, make CSTs on top of the Fabric E corners of the flying geese unit (Fig K).

16

Repeat steps 14–15 to make eight flying geese units. Sew the units together in pairs, matching points as shown, to complete four side units (Fig L).

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

17

Arrange your centre, corner and side units into a nine-patch, referring to the photo for placement. Sew the blocks together in rows, then sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.

18

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

19

Quilt as desired. Nicole quilted diagonal lines at each corner, in apart.

20

Trim the excess batting and backing level with the quilt top edges and square up the quilt.

21

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press. 22

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
