2½in x 3½in rectangle.

■ Two 2½in x 3½in Fabric A rectangles. Sew together along the long edges as shown (Fig 1). Repeat to make the bottom row.

Sew together along the 2½in edges as shown (Fig 2).

12

Assemble the block, alternating the pieced rows and two Fabric A 12½in x

2½in strips as shown (Fig 3).

13

Repeat steps 10–12 to make all of the hashtag blocks as follows:

■ Fabric A –$make two.

■ Fabric B – make three.

■ Fabric C – make three.

■ Fabric D – make one.

■ Fabric E – make three.

■ Fabric F – make three.

■ Fabric G – make two.

MAKING THE LETTER M BLOCK

14

Foundation piece the centre of the Letter M block as follows. Using your Letter M template as a guide, cut the fabric pieces for each section, making sure that the pieces will be at least ¼in larger than the section they will cover, all the way around. Sections 2 and 4 use Fabric H and the remaining sections use Fabric I.

15

Take your copy of the Letter M FPP template and the corresponding Fabric I fabric piece, for Section 1. Place the fabric right side up on the unprinted side of the template against section 1. Ensure that the fabric covers the whole section, plus at least ¼in all round. Pin in place.

16

Place the Fabric H Section 2 piece right side down on top of the Section 1 piece, matching up raw edges on the side where Sections 1 and 2 will be joined, and making

sure that when folded back along the seam line, Section 2 will be covered by the fabric plus at least ¼in all round. Pin in place.

17

Turn the template over to the printed side and stitch along the marked line between Sections 1 and 2, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Fold the template away from the seam and trim to ¼in. Fold the template back, turn the work to the fabric side, flip Section 2 open and then press.

18

Continue working in this way to piece the remaining sections on the FPP template. Trim along the dotted seam allowance line. Remove the paper template, tearing along the seam lines.

19

To finish the M Block sew together one Fabric I 1in x 8½in strip and one Fabric H 2in x 8½in strip, along the long side. Repeat to make a second strip set. Sew in place on either side of the FPP unit, as shown (Fig 4).

20

Sew one Fabric I 10½in x 1½in strip to the top and bottom of the block.

MAKING THE LETTER O BLOCK

21

Piece each of the four Letter O templates as described in steps 14–18, using Fabrics I for Sections 1 and 3 and Fabric C for Section 2.

22

Sew one Fabric C 2in square to a 2in x

2¼in Fabric I piece. Repeat to make a second. Sew two Fabric C 2in squares to either end of the 5½in x 2in Fabric I strip. Then assemble the block in three rows, as shown (Fig 5).

23

Sew one Fabric I 8½in x 1½in strip to either side of the block.

24

Sew one Fabric I 10½in x 1½in strip to the top and bottom of the block.

MAKING THE LETTER W BLOCK

25

Piece the Letter W templates as described in steps 14–18, using Fabric E for Sections 2, 4, 6 and 8, and Fabric I for the remaining sections.

26

Sew one Fabric I 10½in x 1½in strip to the top and bottom of the block.

MAKING THE LETTER E BLOCK

27

Take three Fabric G 4½in x 2in strips, and two Fabric I 4½in x 2¼in strips. Sew together, alternating colours, along the long edges.

28

Sew one Fabric I 2¾in x 8½in strip to one Fabric G 2in x 8½in strip, along the long edge. Sew this to the left-hand side of your strip set. Sew one Fabric I

2¾in x 8½in strip to the right-hand side of your strip set (Fig 6).

29

Sew one Fabric I 10½in x 1½in strip to the top and bottom of the block.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

30

Arrange the blocks into rows. Sew the hashtag blocks together in rows, with a 2½in x 12½in sashing strip between each block.

31

Assemble the ‘MEOW’ letter blocks, then sew a 40½in x 1½in strip to the top

and bottom. Sew the remaining hashtag block to the letter blocks, with a 2 in x 12 in sashing strip in the middle.

32

Sew the rows together with 54 in x

2 in strips between each row. Then sew 54 in x 3 in strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Finally sew 3 in x

74 in strips to either side to complete the quilt top.

FINISHING THE QUILT

33

Cut your backing in half along the width. Sew together along the long edges using a in seam. Press open.

34

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top.

35

Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

36

Quilt as desired. This quilt features a free-motion loop and swirl pattern that contrasts against the straight lines of the patchwork design.

37

Trim the excess batting and backing level with the quilt top edges and square up the quilt.

38

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.

39

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
