MAKING THE HSTS

Pair a Fabric A and B 7in square RST. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the lighter fabric, as shown. Sew ¼in from either side of the line (Fig 1). Cut along the marked line to make two Fabric A/B HSTs. Press the seam towards the darker fabric. Trim each HST to 6½in square. Repeat the last two steps with the remaining 7in squares to make:

■ Six (6) Fabric A/B HSTs (only five are used).

■ Six (6) Fabric B/C HSTs (only five are used).

■ Four (4) Fabric C/D HSTs.

■ Six (6) Fabric D/E HSTs (only five are used).

MAKING THE QSTS 10

Repeat step 7, pairing one Fabric A and B 7½in square and one Fabric B and C

7½in square.

11

Cut each of the units from the last step along the marked line. Press seams towards Fabric B in each unit. Don’t trim the units.

12

Take one of the Fabric A/B HSTs from the last step and mark a diagonal line perpendicular to the sewn seam, on the wrong side. Pair this with a Fabric B/C HST. The seams should nest together, with the Fabric B triangles opposite each other.

13

Sew ¼in from either side of the marked line. Cut along the line and press open (Fig 2). You will only use one of these Fabric A/B/C QSTs. Trim the QST to 6½in square, carefully centring the seams.

14

Repeat steps 10–13, using one Fabric C and D 7½in square and one Fabric D

FINISHING THE QUILT

and E 7 in square. Press seams toward Fabric D, and align the Fabric D triangles opposite each other as you did with Fabric B. Repeat to make seven Fabric C/D/E QSTs.

15

Arrange your HSTs, QSTs and remaining Fabric A pieces as shown in the Layout Diagram. Make sure to carefully orient the QSTs to create the criss-cross effect.

16

Sew the pieces together in rows, pressing seams open or to one side. Then sew the rows together, carefully matching seams.

17

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

18

Quilt as desired. Yvonne quilted straight lines using 50wt Aurifil 4661 (Mint Julep) and 4662 (Crème de Menthe) variegated thread.

19

Trim the excess batting and backing level with the quilt top edges and square up the quilt.

20

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.

21

Sew the double-fold binding to the front of the quilt, taking care to fold a neat mitre at each corner.

Then fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and stitch in place by hand or machine, as preferred, to finish.
