Combine contrasting triangle blocks with brilliant solids

NOTES

■ Seam allowances are ¼in throughout, unless otherwise noted.

■ Press seams open, unless otherwise instructed.

■ Templates include seam allowances, where necessary. For templates, see p86.

■ WOF = width of fabric.

■ WST = wrong sides together.

■ RST = right sides together.

■ HST = Half-square Triangles.

FABRICS USED

All solids are from the 1000 Solids collection by Lecien.

CUTTING OUT

1 From Fabric A cut:

■ Eighteen (18) 6in squares.

■ Twenty (20) 3½in squares.

■ Twenty eight (28) Template A triangles.

2 From Fabric B cut:

■ Ten (10) 6in squares.

■ Ten (10) 3½in squares.

3 From Fabric C cut:

■ Four (4) 6in squares.

■ Four (4) 3½in squares.

■ Forty (40) Template A triangles.

4 From Fabric D cut: ■ Two (2) 5½in x WOF strips. Fold each strip in half, WST, and use Template B to cut twenty (20) half triangles from each folded strip, for a total of forty (40) triangles. Cutting on the fold means half of the pieces will be mirror images for the left and right side of blocks.

5 From Fabric E cut:

■ Thirty two (32) 6in squares.

■ Thirty (30) 3½in squares.

■ One (1) 5½in square.

■ Three (3) 5½in x 10½in strips.

■ One (1) 5½in x 20½in strip.

■ One (1) 5½in x 25½in strip.

■ One (1) 5½in x 35½in strip.

■ Three (3) 5½in x 40½in strips.

■ Five (5) 5½in x WOF strips. Fold each strip in half and subcut using Template B, as before. You will need ninety six (96) half triangles, with half as mirror image pieces.

6 From the binding fabric cut:

■ Eight (8) 2½in x WOF strips.

MAKING THE HSTS

7 Place one Fabric A 6in square RST with a Fabric E square. Mark a diagonal line on the back of the lighter square.

8 Sew ¼in from either side of the drawn line. Cut along the line and press open. Trim each HST to 5½in square, aligning the seam with the 45 degree line on your ruler.

9 Repeat steps 7–8 using the 6in squares to make the following HSTs, trimming each HST to 5½in square:

■ Thirty six (36) Fabric A/E HSTs.

■ Twenty (20) Fabric B/E HSTs.

■ Eight (8) Fabric C/E HSTs.

10 Repeat steps 7–8 using 3½in squares to make the following HSTs, trimming each HST to 3in square:

■ Thirty six (36) Fabric A/E HSTs.

■ Sixteen (16) Fabric B/E HSTs.

■ Eight (8)Fabric C/E HSTs.

■ Four (4) Fabric A/B HSTs.

11 Arrange the 3in HSTs in sets of four as shown, and sew together as you would a four-patch block (Fig 1).

MAKING THE TRIANGLE BLOCKS

12 Sew a Fabric E half triangle to each side of a Fabric A triangle as shown (Fig 2).

13 Repeat step 12 to make the required number of triangles as shown (Fig 3). Take care to orient the colours correctly for each side.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

14 Arrange the HST units and triangle blocks in sets of nine, as shown (Figs 4–9). Sew together as you would a nine-patch block. You will have four Fabric C triangle blocks remaining.

15 Arrange the completed blocks in four rows of four, referring to the photography for placement. Sew the blocks together in four rows, then sew the four rows together.

16 Join a Fabric E 5½in x 10½in strip to the end of a 5½in x 40½in strip along the short edge. Press seam open. Take one of your Fabric C triangle blocks and, with the triangle pointing down, join the Fabric E strip to the left side. Then join a 5½in square to the right side (Fig 10). Sew this to the bottom edge of your quilt top, matching up the triangle with the corresponding block.

17 Take another Fabric C triangle. With the triangle pointing up, add a Fabric E

5½in x 20½in strip to the left and a

5½in x 35½in strip to the right (Fig 11). Sew this to the top edge of your quilt top.

18 Take another Fabric C triangle and, with the triangle pointing up, sew a 5 in x 40 in strip to the left and a 5 in x 25 in strip to the right (Fig 12). Sew this to the left edge of the quilt.

19 Join a Fabric E 5 in x 10 in strip to the end of a 5 in x 40 in strip along the short edge. Join the last triangle pointing up, with the long strip on the left and a 5 in x 10 in strip to the right (Fig 13). Sew this to the right edge of the quilt.

FINISHING THE QUILT

20 Cut your backing in half along the width. Sew together along the long edges using a in seam. Press open.

21 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

22 Quilt as desired. Susan quilted a spiral outwards from the centre of the feature nine-patch block, using a coordinating lime green thread.

23 Trim the excess batting and backing level with the quilt top edges and square up the quilt.

24 Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.

25 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
