MAKING HSTS

10

Take one Fabric A 9¾in square and one Fabric G 9¾in square. Place RST and mark two diagonal lines, from corner to corner, as shown (Fig 1).

11

Sew ¼in on either side of the marked lines (Fig 2). Then cut apart on the marked diagonal lines and horizontal and vertical lines as shown to make eight Half-square Triangle units (Fig 3).

12

Open out each HST unit and press. Trim each unit to 4½in square. Repeat with the remaining Fabric A and G 9¾in squares, for a total of thirty two (32) Fabric A/G HSTs (Fig 4).

MAKING FLYING GEESE

13

Take one Fabric G 8½in x 4½in and one Fabric B 47/ 8in square. Cut the square in half on the diagonal.

14

Arrange one triangle RST with the

8½in x 4½in rectangle, as shown. Pin in place. Sew along the triangle edge, using a ¼in seam allowance (Fig 5).

15

Trim away the excess fabric from the seam allowance. Press the corner open (Fig 6).

16

Repeat the last two steps at the other end of the rectangle to complete one Flying Geese block (Fig 7). Make eight of these Fabric G/B units.

17

Repeat steps 13–16 to make the required 8 in x 4 in Flying Geese units as shown (Fig 8).

18

Repeat steps 13–16 using the 8 in x 16 in rectangles and 87/ 8in squares. Make the required number in combinations shown (Fig 9).

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT

19

Sew the Fabric H 32 in x 2 in strips together in pairs along the short edges to make six 64 in x 2 in strips.

20

Arrange the pieced units in rows, as shown in the Layout Diagram. Sew the units together in rows.

21

Sew the pieced rows together, with the Fabric H strips between, as shown, to complete the quilt top.

FINISHING THE QUILT

22

Cut your backing in half along the width. Sew together along the long edges using a in seam. Press open.

23

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

24

Quilt as desired. This quilt uses wavy free-motion lines. Trim the excess batting and backing level with the quilt top edges and square up the quilt.

25

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.

26

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back and stitch in place to finish.
