TINY TOUCHES OF HAND QUILTING HELP TO ENHANCE THE APPLIQUÉ DESIGN

6

Fuse each Template D piece to the wrong side of Fabric A and cut along the line.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT

7

With your background fabric facing right side up, position the large Fabric C circle on top and fuse in place, referring to the photography for placement.

8

Position the smaller Fabric B circle on top, and fuse in place.

9

Stitch around the outer edge of each fused piece, using a small zigzag stitch and coordinating thread. Go slowly around the curved edges, to achieve a neat finish.

10

Arrange your triangles on top of the large Fabric C circle. Some of the triangles will extend over the edge of the background fabric, and will be trimmed later. Once you are happy with the placement, fuse in place.

11

Stitch around the outer edge of each triangle using a small zigzag stitch. At each point, stop with the needle in the down position, and pivot the fabric before continuing to sew along the next edge.

12

Fuse the circles in place, as shown, spacing evenly along the background fabric and following the curve of the circle. Stitch along the outer edge of each circle, this time using a plain straight stitch to secure in place.

FINISHING THE QUILT

13

Square up the quilt top, cutting away any excess fabric extending over the edge of the background fabric.

14

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then the quilt top centrally and right side up. The backing and batting are slightly larger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

15

Quilt as desired. Collette added some hand quilting using large stitches in perlé cotton embroidery thread.

16

Trim the excess batting and backing fabric level with the quilt top edges and square up the quilt.

17

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthwise, WST, and press.

18

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, folding a mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
