MAKING THE STAR BLOCKS

10 Sew one Fabric C HST to each short side of a Fabric A QST, as shown (Fig 1). Press seams towards Fabric C. Trim the unit to measure 3½in x 6½in. Repeat to make a total of seventy two Flying Geese units.

11 Join one Fabric A 2in x WOF strip to one Fabric D strip, along the long edge. Press seams towards Fabric A. Repeat to make a total of four (4) Fabric A/D strip sets.

12 Repeat the process from step 11 with the remaining Fabric A and Fabric I

2in x WOF strips to make a total of four Fabric A/I strip sets.

13 Cut eighteen 2in wide segments from each strip set, as shown (Fig 2).

14 Sew one Fabric A/D unit to one Fabric A/I unit, as shown (Fig 3). Press seams away from Fabric A to make a spinning seam. You may have to pull back the seam a bit at the intersection to get a nice, flat centre. Repeat to make a total of seventy two Four-patch units.

15 Arrange one Fabric E or Fabric F 6½in square, four Flying Geese units and four Four-patch units, as shown (Fig 4). Sew together in rows, pressing the seams as indicated by the arrows. Take care to orient the Four-patch blocks correctly.

16 Join the rows together, carefully nesting seams. Then press the seams to either side, making a spinning seam at each intersection (Fig 5). Repeat to make a total of twelve Fabric E Star Blocks and six Fabric F Star Blocks.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

17 Arrange the blocks with your sashing strips and triangle cornerstones as shown (Fig 6). Sew the blocks together in rows with the Fabric B 2in x 12 in sashing strips in between. Add a Fabric H QST to each end. Note, the two longest rows have only one QST. Join a Fabric H HST to the other end of these two rows.

18 Sew the remaining sashing strips together with the Fabric G 2in squares in between. Add a Fabric G QST to each end of the joined strips.

19 Sew the rows of blocks together, with the sashing strips from step 18 in between, carefully matching seams. Join the remaining two Fabric H HSTs to the remaining unfinished corners to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

20 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

21 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. The batting and backing fabric will be a little bigger than your quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

22 Quilt as desired. Sarah has quilted vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines across the quilt. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

23 Sew the seven Fabric D binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press all the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

24 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
