Stitch a fun and fresh quilt-as-you-go cushion

NOTES

Seam allowances are ¼in, unless otherwise noted. Wash and press all fabrics well before cutting. RST = right sides together. WOF = width of fabric.

FABRICS USED

Fussy cut centre prints are: With The Birds in Pink from Wee Wander by Sarah Jane for Michael Miller. Socks the Fox in Aqua from Les Amis by Patty Sloniger for Michael Miller.

Bikes on Pink from Lightning Bugs and Other Mysteries by Heather Ross for FreeSpirit. PIECING THE CUSHION TOP 1 Baste the batting to the wrong side of the lining cushion piece. We used basting spray, but you could pin your fabric in place and remove them as you go.

2 Find the centre of your cushion and place the hexagon in the centre onto the batting. Then position one 2½in strip RST with one of the hexagon edges. Trim the piece to overlap by at least ½in on each side of the hexagon. Sew in place (Fig A) and then press open (Fig B).

3 Quilt the strip you just pressed in place. We used a ¼in straight line stitch (Fig C).

4 Repeat steps 2–3 on the next hexagon edge, working

counter-clockwise (Fig D). Take care that the second strip overlaps the first strip by at least ½in (Fig E).

5

Continue this process around the remaining four hexagon edges to complete the first round of strips. Press lightly all over (Fig F)

6

The first strip will now look like a triangle, pointing away from the centre (Fig G).

7

To begin the second round of strips, place the next strip so the long edge is ¼in below the bottom point of the first strip (Fig H). Sew in place, press open and quilt as before.

8

Match the next strip to the straight edge of the strip from the round before. Continue in this way around the hexagon, adding strips in a counter clockwise fashion (Fig I).

9

Repeat until the batting is completely covered. Trim to 16 in square.

FINISHING THE CUSHION 10

Baste the piping around the cushion front, matching raw edges and easing around the corners.

11

Take the two backing pieces and finish one 16 in edge on each piece as follows. Turn under in and press, turn under in again, press and topstitch in place. Place the quilted cushion front and two backing pieces RST with the hemmed edges overlapping in the centre. Stitch around the outer edge, getting as close to the piping as possible. Turn right side out and place a cushion pad inside.
