PIECING THE ROWS

20 Using the pieces for Row 1, place a red 2in square at one end of the light orange 2in x 3 in rectangle, with edges aligned. Mark a line diagonally, from

corner to corner, and then sew along the line (Fig 1). Trim ¼in away from the line of stitching and press open (Fig 2). Place the remaining red 2in square at the other end of the rectangle. Stitch in place, trim and press to make a Flying Geese block (Fig 3). Square up to 2in x 3½in.

21 Repeat step 20 with the background 2in x 3½in rectangle and light orange

2in squares to complete both Flying Geese blocks for Row 1.

22 Sew the Flying Geese blocks and remaining Row 1 strips together in one row (Fig 4).

23 Repeat steps 20–22 to complete each row. Sew the rows together, referring to the Layout Diagram, pressing seams open or to one side.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

24 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam to make one large backing piece. Press the seam open.

25 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the three layers together using your preferred basting method.

26 Quilt as desired. Jo quilted a wavy free motion design in rainbow threads. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

27 Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams, sewing all the print scraps together at one end. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

28 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, positioning the print fabrics against the background side of the quilt and creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
