PIECING THE HSTS
8
Place a Fabric A 10in square RST with a Fabric E 10in square. Draw two lines diagonally from corner to corner, to make an X shape. Stitch ¼in away from the line on both sides of either line (Fig 1). Cut down the centre, across the middle and along both drawn lines (Fig 2) and press each HST open. Press the seams to one side and trim each HST to measure 4½in square. You will have eight Fabric A/E HSTs in total.
9
Repeat step 8 with the following 10in squares of fabric:
■ Fabric C and Fabric F. Make a total of eight HSTs.
■ Fabric D and Fabric F. Make a total of eight HSTs. ■ Fabric E and Fabric F. Make a total of sixteen HSTs.
10
Place a Fabric B 5in square RST with a Fabric E 5in square. Draw a line from corner to corner and stitch ¼in away from either side of the line. Cut down the line and press open. Repeat to make a total of four Fabric B/E HSTs and four Fabric C/E HSTs. Trim each HST to 4½in square.
ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP
11
Arrange six of your HSTs as shown (Fig 3). Join in two rows of three, then join the rows together. Make two blocks.
12
Repeat step 11, referring to the figures for fabric placement, to make the remaining chevron blocks. Make two blocks as shown in Fig 4, two Fig 5 blocks and two Fig 6 blocks.
13
Join the two blocks from step 11 together along their long edges, carefully matching seams to make one double chevron block.
14
Sew the Fabric A 28¼in x 16½in rectangle to the left side of the double chevron block. Join the Fabric C
20¾in x 16½in rectangle to the right side to complete the row.
15
Join a coordinating 28¼in x 8½in rectangle to the left side of the remaining chevron blocks. Join a coordinating 20¾in x 8½in rectangle to the right side to complete each row. You should have seven chevron rows.
16
Join the Fabric G 2in x 30½in strips together in pairs, along the short ends. Arrange the pieced rows and six Fabric G strips into thirteen rows. Join together, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement of the rows.
QUILTING AND FINISHING
17
Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.
18
Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. The batting and backing fabric will be a little bigger than the quilt top. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.
19
Quilt as desired. Art Gallery Fabrics quilted a swirling free motion design. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt. 20
Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.
21
Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edges to finish.
