PIECING THE HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLES

13 Place Fabric Y and Z 14in squares RST and draw a line from corner to corner on both diagonals. Sew ¼in either side of both drawn lines. Cut down the drawn lines, as well as horizontally and vertically through the centre to yield eight HST units. Trim each unit to 6½in square. Repeat to make forty eight HSTs.

PIECING THE APPLIQUÉ UNITS

14 Trim Template 1 along the inner dashed line. Place the template onto a piece of thin card, trace around the outside and cut out. Use this card as a pressing template to prepare your appliqué pieces.

15 Take a Fabric A Template 1 piece and place right side down on your work surface. Centre the card template on the back, and press the edges over the template. Press small sections at a time, using the tip of your iron to achieve smooth edges. Allow to cool a moment, then remove the template.

16 Pin the Template 1 piece on a Fabric Y/ Z HST unit, aligning the points with the diagonal seam. Topstitch around the edge of the piece to secure.

17 Repeat steps 15–16 to appliqué a total of six Fabric A pieces on the HSTs.

18 Repeat steps 15–16 with six Fabric B, E, K and O pieces, four Fabric F, I and Q pieces, and two Fabric C, G and T Template 1 pieces with Fabric Y/ Z HSTs.

19 Use the method outlined in steps 16–17 to appliqué your remaining Template 1 pieces on Fabric Y 6½in squares, arranging them diagonally across the squares.

PIECING THE CURVED UNITS

20 Take a Fabric Y Template 3 piece and a Fabric D Template 2 piece and fold each piece in half to find the centre point. Place RST, carefully matching the creases and ends, and pin in place. Ease along the curve and pin together between these points.

21 Sew the pieces together along the curved edge. Work slowly to avoid stretching, removing each of the pins as you go. Press the seam to one side. 22 Repeat the method in steps 20–21 to piece the remaining Template 2 and 3 pieces.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

23 Arrange your pieced appliqué and curve units, as well as the remaining 6 in Fabric Y squares into thirteen rows of thirteen units, referring to the Layout Diagram for placement. Sew the units into rows, then sew the rows together to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

24 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

25 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the three quilt layers together using your preferred basting method. 26 Quilt as desired. Art Gallery Fabrics quilted a swirling freemotion design across the quilt in a contrasting turquoise coloured thread. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

27 Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

28 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.
