FABRICS USED

All prints are from Cotton+Steel, as follows:

⬛ Fabric A: Paint Sweet Pea from the Panorama Ocean collection by Alexia Abegg.

⬛ Fabric C: Rosewater the Pigment collection by Melody Miller.

⬛ Backing: Flutter Pink from the Flutter Collection by Melody Miller.

⬛ Binding: Architectural Blocks Cement from the Poolside Collection by Alexia Abegg & Melody Miller.

⬛ Fabric B is an Optical White Cotton

Supreme by RJR Fabrics.

CUTTING OUT

1 From Fabric A cut:

⬛ Twenty four (24) 9in squares.

⬛ Four (4) 13¼in squares. Subcut along both diagonals to make sixteen QSTs.

⬛ Five (5) 5½in squares. Subcut three of the squares along both diagonals to make twelve QSTs. Subcut the remaining squares in half on one diagonal to make four HSTs.

⬛ Eight (8) 3in x WOF strips for the borders.

2 From Fabric B cut:

⬛ Sixty four (64) 9in x 3½in strips for the sashing.

3 From Fabric C cut:

⬛ A total of twenty five (25) 3½in squares for the cornerstones. To achieve the ombré effect, cut two (2) from the lightest area, six (6) from the medium area, ten (10) from the medium/dark area and seven (7) from the darkest area. 4

From the binding fabric cut: Q Eight (8) 2¼in x WOF strips.

PIECING THE QUILT TOP

5 Arrange your fabric pieces in rows as shown in Fig 1. Note the darkest Fabric C squares are in Row 8, the medium dark in Rows 6 and 10, the medium in Rows 4 and 12 and the lightest in Rows 2 and 14. Sew together in rows, pressing seams away from the Fabric B strips.

6 Sew the rows together, carefully nesting seams. Sew two of the Fabric A HSTs to either end of Row 8, then sew the remaining HSTs above Row 1 and below Row 15 (Fig 2). Trim the edges of the HSTs even with the sides of the quilt.

7 Sew the Fabric A 3in x WOF strips together in four pairs, along the short edges. Sew one pair to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Trim excess. Sew the remaining strips to the sides of the quilt, and trim any remaining excess.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN OMBRÉ FABRIC, TRY USING GRADUATING SOLID FABRICS INSTEAD

QUILTING AND FINISHING

8 Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

9 Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

10 Quilt as desired. Richla quilted a swirling freemotion design to tie in with the swirling print in Fabric A. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

11 Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

12 Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.
