PIECING BLOCK 2

14

Sew a Fabric C, D, E and F 5½in square into pairs, then join the pairs together as a four-patch to complete one Block 2A (Fig 1). Make sixteen Block 2A. Repeat to make ten Block 2B, using Fabric G, H, I and J squares (Fig 2).

PIECING BLOCK 3

15

Pair a Fabric L and K 8½in square RST and sew ¼in around all four sides. Cut on the diagonal from corner to corner in both directions (Fig 3). Press open and trim each HST to 5½in square. Make a total of twelve L/K HSTs.

16

With RST, place a Fabric K 5½in square at the right edge of the Fabric L 5½in x 10½in rectangle. Draw a line on the reverse of the square, from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. Sew on the drawn line and cut the excess with a ¼in seam allowance. Press open (Fig 4). Make a total of twelve of these CST units.

17

Join one L/K HST to one Fabric J 5½in square, along one Fabric K edge. Sew these to the top of the Fabric L/K CST unit to complete one Block 3 (Fig 5). Make a total of twelve Block 3.

PIECING BLOCK 4

18

Sew a Fabric N and D 2½in x 10½in rectangle together along the long sides, then sew a Fabric K 1½in x 10½in rectangle to the other side of the Fabric N rectangle. Sew a Fabric M and G 5½in square together. Press each of the units, then sew the two units together to complete one Block 4 (Fig 6). Make a total of eight Block 4.

PIECING BLOCK 5

19

Sew a Fabric F and Fabric O 5 in x

10 in piece together along the long side to make one Block 5 (Fig 7). Make a total of six Block 5.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

20

Sew the blocks together in eight rows of eight, referring to the Layout Diagram for block placement, rotating the blocks as shown. Press the seams in opposite directions row by row, so that they nest together.

21

Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top. Press the row seams open.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

22

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

23

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

24

Quilt as desired. Nicole quilted straight lines diagonally across the quilt top using a contrasting pink thread. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

25

Sew the nine 2 in x WOF binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold the joined strip in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

26

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure in place temporarily using pins or binding clips. Hand stitch in place using a coordinating coloured thread to finish.
