PIECING THE CURVE UNITS

6

Take one pink Template A piece and one white Template B piece and fold both pieces in half to mark the centre points. Place Template B on top of Template A, carefully matching the creases and ends, and pin in place at these points. Ease along the curve and pin together between these points, taking care to not stretch the fabric.

7

Sew the pieces together along the curved edge. Work slowly, lowering your needle and pivoting the foot when necessary to avoid stretching, removing each of the pins as you go. Press seams towards the Template A pieces and trim to

6½in square, so the ends of the curved seams are ¼in from the edge.

8

Repeat steps 6–7 to make curve units as follows:

■ Thirty two red/white.

■ Thirty four pink/white.

■ Thirty four red/blue.

■ Thirty two pink/blue.

PIECING THE CENTRE UNITS

9

Take a pink/white curve unit. Align Template B in the top right corner and trim (Fig 1). Sew a red Template A piece to the curve. Repeat, aligning Template B in the top left corner, and make a mirror image unit. Join, aligning curved seams (Fig 2).

10

Sew two pink/blue curve units together, aligning the curved seams to form a semi-circle. Sew to the bottom of the unit from step 9 (Fig 3).

11

Repeat step 9 using two red/blue curve units, then sewing pink Template A pieces. Repeat step 10 with two red/white curve units. Sew together as before.

12

Sew two pink/blue curve units together, with the curves going away from each other (Fig 4). Repeat to make a total of three of these units. Repeat to make three units using red/white curve units.

13

Sew the units from steps 10–12, and the white and blue 6 in x 12 in pieces into a column as shown (Fig 5).

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

14

Arrange the remaining curve units and

6 in squares into four quadrants as shown (Fig 6). Sew together in rows, then sew the rows together.

15

Sew two left quadrants together, then join the two right quadrants. Attach to either side of the centre strip to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

16

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

17

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

18

Quilt as desired. Daisy quilted fans inside the curve units and straight lines through the background. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

19

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

20

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
