PIECING THE HSTS

Sew a scant ¼in seam from either side of the diagonals, then cut along the drawn lines to make eight HSTs (Fig 1). Repeat with the remaining 5¾in squares.

9 Press seams open for each HST unit and trim to 2½in square, for a total of sixteen dark red/white HSTs.

MAKING THE LOG CABINS

10 Sew one green and yellow 1½in square together, pressing the seam towards the green fabric. Sew the green 1½in x 2½in strip to the left side (Fig 2).

11 Add the shorter medium blue strip to the top of the block, then the longer strip to the left side. Repeat with the dark blue strips to complete one Log Cabin corner (Fig 3).

12 Repeat steps 10–11 to make four Log Cabin corners.

ASSEMBLING THE BLOCK

13 Sew two HSTs together, with the red triangles pointing down to the right. Sew two HSTs with the red triangles pointing down to the left. Sew a white 2½in square to the left of this strip (Fig 4). Repeat to make four sets of strip pairs.

14 Sew the shorter HST strip pair to the left side of each Log Cabin corner. Sew the longer HST strip pair to the top (Fig 5).

15 Arrange the corner blocks, white 2½in x 6½in strips and medium red 2½in square as shown. Sew the units together in rows. Then sew the rows together to complete the block.
