FABRICS USED

All fabrics are Kona Cotton Solids by Robert Kaufman in Primrose, Salmon, Terracotta, Wasabi, Ice Frappe, Capri, Indigo and White.

CUTTING OUT

1

From the green fabric cut: ■ Four (4) 1in x WOF strips.

2

From each of the turquoise, coral and pink fabrics cut:

■ One (1) 1in x WOF strip.

3

From the light blue fabric cut: ■ Two (2) 1in x WOF strips.

PREPARING THE STRIPS

4

Take one of your 1in x WOF strips and trim off the selvedge. Insert one end into a ½in bias strip maker, folding the edges inwards. Carefully feed through the maker and use a pin to pull the end through the other side. Press the folds in place using an iron, pulling the entire strip through the maker and pressing all raw edges inwards (Fig A).

5

Repeat step 4 with each of your strips. Fold each strip into quarters and trim into four approx 10in strips.

PREPARING THE BOARD

6

Draw a 7½in square on your foam board using a dark pen (Fig B). This will be your guide. Place the interfacing square on top, fusible side up, and pin tautly in place. Make sure to pin horizontally, burying the end of each pin inside the foam board.

7

Take a green prepared strip and place against the left edge of your marked square, on top of the interfacing. Pin at either end. Line up the next green strip against the first, and pin again. Continue until you’ve pinned fifteen strips, covering the 7½in square (Fig C).

BOLD CONTRASTING COLOURS WILL HELP TO MAKE YOUR WOVEN DESIGN POP!

WEAVING

8

Take a light blue strip and thread the end through your Wefty Needle, if you’re using one. If not, you can weave the strip by hand. Weave the strip under the first green strip and over the next five. Weave it under the next three and over the following five. End the row by weaving under the last strip (Fig D).

9

Remove the Wefty Needle and push the strip up towards the pins. Make sure that it is straight and pin at the ends, if you wish.

10

Weave a coral piece next as follows: under two, over three, under two, over one, under two, over three, under two. 11

Weave a pink piece next as follows: over one, under two, over one, under two, over three, under two, over one, under two, over one.

12

Weave a light blue piece as follows: over two, under three, over five, under three, over two.

13

Weave a turquoise piece as follows: over three, under one, over three, under one, over three, under one, over three.

14

Continue in this way, weaving the remaining horizontal strips as pictured (Fig E). You will have a few strips left over.

FINISHING

15

Carefully unpin the woven panel and the interfacing, taking care not to shift the strips. Lightly press in the centre, on top of the panel using an iron on low heat. Remove the board from underneath and firmly press the two layers together, securing the weaving in place.

16

Trim the loose ends and square up the panel to 7 in square. You may wish to stitch the ends in place, but Lorna opted for the raw edge look. Adhere to the backing board of your frame and mount on the wall to finish.
