CUTTING OUT

1

Using the template as a guide, cut the fabric pieces for each section of the FPP templates, making sure the pieces will be at least ºin larger than the section they will cover, all the way around.

2

From the interfacing cut: ■ Five (5) 5in squares.

FOUNDATION PAPER PIECING

3

Foundation Paper Piece block R as follows. Place the fabric piece for Section 1A right side up on the unprinted side of the template against the section. Ensure that the fabric piece covers the whole of Section 1A, plus at least ºin all around the edges. Pin in place.

4

Place the Section 2A fabric piece right side down on top of the Section 1A piece, matching up raw edges on the side where Sections 1 and 2 will be joined and making sure that when folded back along the seam line, Section 2 will be covered by the fabric plus at least ºin all around. Pin the fabric in place.

5

Turn the template over to the printed side and stitch along the marked line between Sections 1 and 2, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam to secure. Fold the template away from the seam and trim to ºin. Fold the template back, turn the work to the fabric side, flip Section 2 open and then press.

6

Continue working in this way to piece the remaining sections on the FPP template, in numerical order. Trim along the dotted seam allowance line. Repeat steps 3– 6 to piece Section B of the block R FPP template (Fig A).

7

Pin together completed Sections A and B, carefully matching points at the edges and seams. Return your stitch length to its normal length for piecing. Baste across the centre of the letter, and check the letter lines up correctly. Adjust as necessary, then sew together (Fig B).

8

Remove the paper from the seam only and press the seam open. Square up the block to 5Ωin square.

9

Repeat the method in steps 3– 6 to piece the remaining D, E, A and M FPP templates in numerical order. Trim each block to 5Ωin square and carefully remove the papers from the back.

FINISHING

10

Centre the interfacing on the wrong side of each block and fuse in place, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Centre each block in an embroidery hoop (Fig C). Tighten the screw on the hoop, then trim the excess fabric on the wrong side of each hoop to finish (Fig D).
