PREPARE YOUR BINDING

11

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears.

12

Press the binding strip in half, lengthwise, WST. Unfold. Press the long raw edges in to meet the centre crease. Fold and press the strip in half again, enclosing the raw edges. Trim a 22in long piece from the strip, for the pocket binding. The rest will be used to bind the edges of the mat.

PIECE THE BACK PANEL WITH A PATCHWORK OF PRINTS, AS SHOWN ABOVE

MAKING THE POCKET PANEL

13

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all your black 1½in squares.

14

Place one black square at the end of a yellow 1½in x 2½in rectangle, RST, and sew along the marked line. Trim, leaving a ¼in seam allowance and press open. Repeat on the opposite corner to make one Flying Geese unit (Fig 1).

15

Repeat step 14 to make eleven yellow Flying Geese and ten aqua Flying

Geese. Arrange in a row, alternating the colours, and sew together (Fig A).

16

Sew a white 1½in x 21½in strip to either side of the Flying Geese strip. Add the two pocket contrast 1½in x 21½in strips to the top and bottom to complete the pocket front (Fig B).

17

Place your 6½in x 21½in pocket lining piece RS down, place the same size batting piece on top, and your pieced pocket front RS up to make a quilt sandwich. Baste and quilt as desired. Jess quilted along the horizontal seam lines. Baste around the outer edges.

18

Take your pocket binding strip and unfold. Centre at the top edge of your pocket, RST, aligning one long raw edge and clip or pin in place. Sew using a ¼in seam allowance. Fold the binding over the the back of the pocket, making sure to refold along your pressed lines so the raw edge is enclosed. Machine topstitch or slip stitch in place by hand, and trim any excess binding from the ends (Fig C).

MAKING THE MAT

19

Sew the 5¼in x 21½in pocket lining to the bottom of your 18¼in x 21½in main front piece. Repeat the process with the two back pieces.

20

Make a quilt sandwich with the front and back pieces and the 23in x 21½in piece of batting. Quilt as desired. Jess quilted vertical rows approx 2in apart.

21

Place your completed pocket on top of your mat, both RS up. Align the raw edges at the sides and bottom (Fig D). Pin or clip in place, then baste.

22

Use the remaining binding piece to finish the edges, as in step 18, making a neat mitre at each corner (Fig E). Fold to the back and stitch in place to finish.

MAKING THE THREAD CATCHER

8

Make eight yellow and eight aqua Flying Geese units, following steps 13–14 of the sewing mat instructions. Sew together and add the 16 in long white and contrast strips as in step 16 to complete the outer.

9

Place the pieced outer RS up on the 6 in x 16 in batting piece and baste around the outer edge. Quilt as desired. Jess quilted along the horizontal seam lines. Repeat this process with your black circle. 10

Sew your 6 in x 16 in lining piece to the top of the pieced outer, along the long edge. Press the seam open.

11

Fold the joined outer and lining in half, RST, so the short edges meet at the side. Carefully align the centre seam and pin in place. Sew along the short edge, leaving an approx 4in gap in the lining, backstitching at each end (Fig A).

12

With the seam at one side, fold in half and mark the fold at both the lining and outer edge, within the seam allowance. Refold so the marks meet the seam, and mark both new folded edges. These will act as a guide to matching the circular bases.

13

Take your quilted outer circle and lining circle. Use a removable fabric marker to mark the points as shown on the template, within the seam allowance for each circle.

14

Pin the outer circle in place, matching your marked points, to the pieced outer, RST (Fig B). You may want to clip within the seam allowance in a few places to help ease the curves. Sew in place, working slowly around the curve and removing pins as you go.

15

Repeat step 14 to join the lining circle to the other end of the tube. Turn right side out through the gap in the lining. Push the lining down inside the outer and carefully press around the top edge. Topstitch in place.

16

Slip stitch the opening in the lining to finish.
