■ One (1) 10½in x 19½in main panel piece.

PREPARE THE PIECES

6

Fuse the batting to the wrong side of the corresponding Fabric A pieces, except the slip pocket piece, which will be fused to Fabric B. Leave the main panel

piece of batting until step 11. Note, the handle, zip top panel and slip pocket will have one fused and one unfused piece.

PREPARE THE HANDLE AND TABS

7

Place the two handle pieces RST and sew around the outer edge, leaving a turning gap at one side. Clip the corners, turn RS out and press.

8

Measure 1¼in from each short end of the handle and make a mark. Topstitch along both long edges, between the marks only (Fig A).

9

Take the 4in x 5in tab piece and press in half lengthwise, WST. Open out and press the long raw edges in to meet the centre crease. Refold in half and press, so you have an approx 1in x 5in strip with the raw edges enclosed. Topstitch along both long edges.

10

Cut the tab in half to make two approx 1in x 2½in strips. Place the D ring in one, fold in half and baste the raw edges. Repeat with the other tab and swivel clip (Fig B).

MAKE THE OUTER PANEL

11

Place the Fabric A main panel pieces RST. Sew together along one 10½in edge. Press the seam open. Fuse the corresponding batting to the wrong side of the fabric.

12

Use a 3½in diameter circle or a round object, like a tea cup, to mark and then cut all four corners.

ADD THE OUTER ZIP POCKET

13

Measure 6½in from the bottom of the panel and mark using a removable fabric pen. Layer the Fabric D zip pocket lining RST with the panel, aligning one short edge with your marked line. Take care to centre across the panel. Pin securely in place (Fig C).

14

Measure 1in down from the zip lining, and draw a 7in long line, centring on the lining. Draw a second line 3/8in below. Join the ends to form a box. These lines will be the sewing lines in the next step. Draw another line in the centre of the box, approx 6¼in long, and join the ends to the corners of the box with diagonal lines. These will be the cutting lines in step 15 (Fig D).

15

Sew around the sewing lines, marked in the last step. It’s helpful to start in the centre of one long line, pivot with your needle down at each corner, and then overlap the beginning of your stitching line when you come back around to it. Carefully cut through all layers, on the marked cutting line. Take extra care not to clip into your line of stitching when cutting the corners.

16

Turn the lining to the wrong side of the main panel, through the clipped box. Carefully press, so the lining is completely hidden from the front. Baste close the edges, to keep the lining in place.

17

Place the zipper underneath the opening, and baste in place. Once you’re happy, topstitch all the way around the opening, making sure to catch the zip tape. Remove the basting stitches.

18

Bring the bottom short edge of the pocket lining up to meet the top edge. Pin or clip in place. Sew along each side and the top edge of the pocket lining. Make sure to fold the main panel out of the way as you sew, so you are only sewing through the pocket lining fabric.

FINISH THE OUTER PANEL

19

Place the main panel RS up on top of the foam interfacing. Baste around the outer edge. Trim away excess foam.

20

Measure and mark 2in either side of the centre seam across the main panel (Fig E). Topstitch along both marked lines.

21

Measure and mark 2½in from each side of the main panel, along the centre seam line. Align one end of the handle with one mark. Topstitch a box with an ‘X’ at the unstitched edge of the handle (Fig F). Repeat with the other end of the handle, aligning with the other mark.

PREPARE THE TOP AND SLIP POCKETS

22

Place the two slip pocket pieces RST, sew along one short side edge and press the seam open. Turn so the wrong sides are together, and topstitch along the seamed edges. Baste around the raw edges to form the slip pocket piece.

23

Take two zip tab pieces and press under ¼in on one short edge of each piece. Sandwich one end of the zip between these short edges, WST, and glue or topstitch in place. Trim the sides even with the long edges of the zip (Fig G). Repeat at the other end of the zip.

24

Take one each of Fabric A and B zip top panels (use the unfused Fabric A piece). Place the Fabric B piece RS up. Place the prepared zip from step 23 RS down, aligning one edge at the top of the fabric. Place the Fabric A piece on top, RS down. Pin or clip in place.

25

Sew the fabric to the zip using a zipper foot. Press both fabric pieces away from the zip. Topstitch in place.

26

Baste the vinyl piece to the remaining edge of the zip, not too close to the teeth (Fig H).

27

Take the Fabric B zip binding piece and place RS up. Place the zip panel on top, RS down, aligning the edge of the zip (with vinyl attached) with the edge of the fabric. Place the Fabric A zip binding piece RS down on top. Stitch in place, finger press open, and topstitch as in step 25.

28

Carefully press under ¼in along the long raw edge of each zip binding piece. Topstitch along the folded edge, making sure to catch both pieces, enclosing the top edge of the vinyl.

29

Take one Fabric C binding strip and press in half lengthwise, WST. Unfold and press the long edges in to meet the crease. Repress in half. Sandwich one edge

of the mesh fabric inside this binding strip. Clip in place, then topstitch close to the fold.

30

Place the mesh pieces on top of the vinyl pocket panel. Baste around the outer edges. Sew a vertical line down the centre of the mesh pocket, backstitching at each end.

MAKE THE INNER PANEL

31

Place the Fabric B inner panel piece RS up on your work surface. Place the prepared zip/mesh pocket at the top, aligning raw edges at the top and sides. Baste in place along the sides.

32

Round the corners of the Fabric B panel, as you did in step 12. Trim through both the panel and pocket in the top corners. Baste the top and curved corners of the pocket.

33

Place the prepared slip pocket just below the bottom edge of the mesh. This pocket points sideways, so the finished edge should be in the centre of the panel, running vertically. Baste in place along the raw edges.

34

Take one Fabric C binding strip and press under in along both long edges. Place the strip on top of the main panel, so it covers the bottom of the vinyl/ mesh pocket and the top of the slip pocket. Topstitch in place (Fig I).

35

Mark and sew two horizontal lines across the slip pocket, to divide, backstitching at each end to secure.

MAKE THE INNER ZIP POCKET

36

Prepare the zip following the process in steps 23–25, using the fused Fabric A zip top panel piece. Take the Fabric A and B lower zip panels and sew to the other side of the zip as in step 24–25. Round the bottom two corners of the zip panel, to match the main panel.

37

Take the Fabric A gusset and side gusset pieces. Sew the side gusset pieces to each end of one gusset piece, along the short ends. Then sew the remaining gusset piece between the side gusset pieces to form a loop.

38

Arrange the gusset RST with the front of the zip panel. Clip, then baste in place.

39

Repeat with the Fabric B gusset pieces. Arrange RST with the lining side of the zip panel. Carefully baste in place, then sew. Press both gussets away from the zip panel. Baste around the outer raw edges.

40

Arrange the inner zip pocket at the bottom of the inner panel. Baste in place all the way around, making sure the raw edges are aligned at the side, and going outwards at the top, so they will not show on the inside of the pocket.

41

Use the last Fabric C binding strip to cover the top of the zip pocket and bottom of the slip pocket, as in step 34.

FINISH THE BAG

42

Place the inner and main panel wrong sides together. Baste together around the outer edge.

43

Measure and mark the centre at the top and bottom edge. Place the swivel clip tab at the top centre and the D-ring tab at the bottom centre, aligning raw edges. Baste in place.

44

Press the Fabric D bias strips in half along the length. Sew around the outer edge of the panel. Press to the other side and hand stitch in place to finish, making sure to neatly cover the raw edges of the pockets.

CONSTRUCTING THE BASKETS

5

Fuse the batting to the wrong side of the corresponding exterior and one pocket piece. Baste the exterior circle to the foam interfacing, and trim away any excess foam. 6

Take the two pocket pieces and place RST. Sew along the top raw edge, and press the seam open.

7

Turn the pocket pieces, so they are WST and press. Topstitch along the top edge (Fig A). Place the pocket onto the lower half of the lining piece and baste along the raw edges (Fig B).

8

Mark vertical seams along the pocket and sew, backstitching at each end to secure. Pull the threads to the back and knot off (Fig C). Debbie sewed six lines, evenly spaced across the pocket.

9

Bring the two short side edges of the lining RST and sew, forming a tube. Press the seam open.

10

Take the lining circle and place RST with the bottom edge of the lining

tube. Pin or clip around the outer edge, gently easing the tube around the circle piece. With the tube positioned on top, machine sew around the edge of the circle, leaving an approx 2in gap for turning right side out.

11

Repeat steps 9–10 with the exterior pieces. Sew the whole way around the circle when joining the pieces together, as you will not need a turning gap for the exterior. Turn RS out.

12

Place the basket exterior inside the lining, RST. Sew around the top edge of the basket. Turn RS out through the gap in the lining. Close the gap with a ladder or slipstitch.

13

Push the lining down inside the basket and press the top edge well. Neatly topstitch around the top edge (Fig D). Fold the top edge over by a few inches to finish the basket.
