MAKING THE DOT BLOCKS

6

Sew two white 2½in x 11in strips to either side of a light red 2½in x 11in strip. Subcut the strip into four (4) 2½in x 6½in strips (Fig 1).

7

Sew a white 2½in x 6½in strip either side of each light red pieced strip from the last step, to make four light red dot blocks.

8

Repeat steps 6–7 to make four dot blocks in each of light yellow, dark yellow and dark blue. You will have a total of sixteen dot blocks.

CONSTRUCTING THE MEDALLION CORNER BLOCKS

9

Arrange two light yellow dot blocks with a light green plus block and a white 6½in square in a four patch formation. Sew together. Join a white 2½in x 12½in strip to the top, then a white 2½in x 14½in strip to one side (Fig 2). Repeat to make a second corner block.

10

Repeat the last step, using the light red dot and light blue plus blocks to make the remaining two corner blocks.

PIECING THE MEDALLION QUILT

11

Gather your blocks from each previous month, and arrange as shown in the Layout Diagram on p97. Refer to the diagram for placement throughout as you sew the quilt top together, working from the centre outwards.

12

Sew the light red 6½in paw blocks in pairs, with the white triangles in the centre. Join a white 2½in x 6½in strip to either side of two of the pairs. Join these to the centre of the medallion. Join a white 6½in x 8½in piece to either side of the

remaining two pairs. Sew to the top and bottom of the medallion (Fig 3).

13

Join a white 2 in x 28 in strip to either side of the medallion. Then join a2 in x 32 in strip to the top and bottom of the medallion.

14

Sew a plus block either side of a white 6 in x 8 in piece. Then join a dot block to either side. Make four of these rows. Join a plus block to either end of two rows (Fig 4). Sew the shorter plus rows either side of the medallion. Join the longer plus rows to the top and bottom of the medallion.

15

Join a white 6 in x 44 in strip to either side of the medallion. Join the plain and double paw blocks to either side of the remaining 6 in x 44 in strips. Join these rows to both the top and bottom of the medallion.

16

Arrange your large blocks in four rows of three, with one white 14 in square, referring to the Layout Diagram, or in your preferred layout. Sew together in rows. Sew one row to each side of the medallion.

17

Arrange and sew the corner blocks to either side of the remaining rows. Sew to the top and bottom to complete the medallion quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

18

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and

sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

19

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together.

20

Quilt as desired. Sarah quilted a wavy cross-hatch using her walking foot across the quilt. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

21

Sew the binding strips together end-toend using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

22

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
