PIECING FULL DIAMONDS

9

Take one Template 1 and two Template 5. On the right bottom edge of Template 1, pin and sew a Template 5. Press, then repeat to sew the remaining Template 5 piece to the bottom left. Refer to Fig 1 for colour placement, making the number of triangles shown.

PIECING TWO-STRIP DIAMONDS

10

Take two Template 2 and two Template 5. Sew the Template 2 pieces together along the long edge. Then sew the two Template 5 pieces in place, as in step 9. Refer to Fig 2 for colour placement, making a total of three of each of the triangles shown.

PIECING THREE-STRIP DIAMONDS

11

Take one Template 2, two Template 4 and two Template 5. Sew the two Template 4 pieces together along the long edges, then sew a Template 2 piece. Sew the Template 5 pieces in place as before, to complete the triangle. Refer carefully to Fig 3 for colour placement, ensuring you orient the strips correctly for each triangle. Make six of each triangle shown.

PIECING THE TIP DIAMONDS

12

Take one Template 2, two Template 3 and two Template 5. Sew the two Template 3 diamonds together, then add a Template 2 piece along the long edge.

Join the Template 5 pieces as before. Refer to Fig 4 for colour placement, making six of each triangle. Take extra care to orient your diamonds correctly for each triangle.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

13

Use Template 8 to neaten the edges and trim all of the pieced triangles to size. Make sure to leave ¼in below the joined points at the base of the triangle. This will ensure that when you sew the triangles together, the points of the diamonds won’t be cut off.

14

Lay the triangle and half triangle pieces out in eight rows of eleven, using Fig 5 above as your placement guide. Pin and sew the pieces together in each row. Then sew the rows together to complete the quilt top, carefully matching seams between rows.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

15

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and

sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.

16

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

17

Quilt as desired. Elisabeth quilted straight lines across the background and intricate patterns inside each star. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

18

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end with diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

19

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edge to finish.
