PREPARE THE HSTS

8

Place one off-white and one caramel 2½in square RST. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of one square. Sew ¼in either side of the marked line, cut along the line and press the HST unit open. Make a total of six caramel/off-white HSTs and trim each to 2in square. Discard one HST or set it aside for cushion two.

9

Place a light pink and coral 5in square RST. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one square. Sew along the marked line. Trim ¼in from the marked line on one side and press the HST open. This makes one light pink/coral 5in HST.

10

Repeat step 9, using an off-white and light pink 3½in square to make one HST. Repeat again to make one caramel/ light pink 3½in square HST.

PIECING THE CUSHION 11

Take one grey 3 in x 2in rectangle and one black 2in square and join them along the short edge. Make a second identical unit. Sew these pieced rectangles to the top and bottom of the pink/coral HST. Then add the grey and black 3 in x 8in rectangles to the sides, to make the centre of the cushion (Fig 1).

12

Take four off-white and three light pink 2in squares. Join them together into one strip, alternating between the white and pink squares.

13

Take three off-white and three caramel 3 in x 2in strips. Sew together along the long sides, alternating the off-white and caramel pieces to make one strip.

14

Sew the pink/white strip from step 12 to the bottom of the cushion centre. Sew the off-white/caramel strip to the right edge, making sure an off-white strip is at the top (Fig 2).

15

Take the caramel/off-white HSTs and join into a strip, making a diagonal pattern as shown. Join a caramel 2in x

6 in strip to the end. Sew the strip to the top of the cushion centre (Fig 3).

16

Join the caramel 3 in x 9 in and light pink 3 in x 2in pieces into a strip. Join to the left of the cushion centre (Fig 4). 17

Join an off-white 6 in x 3 in piece to a light pink 8in x 3 in piece. Add the off-white/light pink HST to the off-white end of the strip. Join a pink 5in x 3 in piece to an off-white 9 in x 3 in piece. Add the caramel/light pink HST to the light pink end of this strip. Add these strips to the top and bottom of the cushion centre to finish (Fig 5). FINISHING THE CUSHION 18

Press the cushion top carefully. Baste the top and batting together using your preferred method.

19

Quilt as desired. Sophie quilted horizontal and diagonal straight lines in apart. Trim off any excess batting and square up the cushion front.

20

Take one piece of backing fabric and fold in half WST, to make an 11in x 17in piece. Topstitch along the folded edge. Repeat for the second piece of backing fabric.

21

Lay the cushion front face up and place the two back pieces on top, right sides down, lining up the raw edges. The two folded edges of the backing pieces will overlap in the centre. Pin in place.

22

Sew around the outer edge and clip the corners. Turn right side out, press and insert a cushion pad to finish.

PIECING THE UNITS

8

Take the off-white and caramel 8in x 2in rectangles. Join together along the

long edges, alternating the off-white and caramel pieces, to make an 8in square.

9

Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of a grey 8in square. Place the pieced square from step 8 right side up on your work surface, so the stripes run horizontally. Place the grey square on top, RST, so the diagonal line runs from the top right corner to the bottom left. Sew directly along the marked line.

10

Trim away the top left corner, leaving a ¼in seam allowance. Press the HST unit open (Fig 1).

MAKE THIS DESIGN YOUR OWN AND SWITCH UP THE COLOUR PLACEMENT FOR A NEW LOOK!

11

Join a black and light pink 2in x 8in piece to the right of the HST. Join a light pink 11in x 2in piece to the bottom (Fig 2).

12

If you are using the extra off-white/ caramel HST from cushion one, skip to step 13. If you have not, follow step 9 from the cushion one instructions, using 2in off-white and caramel squares. Trim the HST to 2in square.

13

Join the HST to the bottom of a black 2in x 6 in strip, then join a coral 2in square to the top to make one strip. Join the light pink and coral 5in x 2in strips along the long edges, alternating the colours, then add a caramel 5in x 2in piece to the top to complete a second strip. Join these strips to the left of the unit from the last step to form the cushion centre (Fig 3).

14

Join one black 6 in x 3 in piece to the left of a grey 11in x 3 in piece. Repeat to make an identical unit. Sew a light pink 2in x 17in piece to the bottom of one unit. Sew these strips to the top and bottom of the cushion centre (Fig 4).

ASSEMBLING AND FINISHING THE CUSHION
