PREPARING THE LETTERS

1

Fussy cut letters that you would like to appear across the quilt from your fabrics. These pieces will be used in Section 1 of Templates B and C. Pieces should be cut to at least 2¾in x 5in, but you may want be more generous in your cutting to ensure you can place the letter exactly as you desire once you start piecing. The letter itself should be no more than 2in high and 1in wide to fit within the pieced triangle.

2

For smaller letters you may want to trim closer to the letter and piece a similar colour background around the letter in

order to make a larger piece. Make sure that when you trim the letter you include at least !/ in around all sides, to ensure you won’t sew over the text.

3

For this quilt, Julianna pieced the letters ‘u’ and ‘I’ together in the word “Quilting” to fit across the first row. If you are using a different message, you may want to write it out and plan how it will fit across your blocks.

CUTTING OUT

4

From your solid and print fabrics, cut an assortment of strips measuring 2¾in wide and 4½in wide.

5

From the binding fabric cut: ■ Five (5) 2½in x WOF.

FOUNDATION PAPER PIECING

6

Take one copy of Template A. Choose a 2¾in wide strip, and trim a piece at least 9½in long. Place on the unprinted side of the template, so it covers Section 1 plus at least ¼in all the way around. Pin in place.

7

Place a 2¾in wide strip RST with the Section 1 piece, so that once sewn it will cover all of Section 2, plus at least ¼in all the way around the edge. Pin in place. With the printed side of the template facing up, sew along the line between Sections 1 and 2 (Fig 1).

8

Fold the template along the seam line. Trim the seam allowance to ¼in. Unfold the template and press the fabric open. Trim the excess fabric from the long strip, and save for piecing other sections (Fig 2).

9

Repeat steps 7– 8 to sew Section 3. Trim along the outer dashed line of the template and remove the paper from the back, tearing along the seam lines (Fig 3).

10

Repeat steps 6–9 to sew each Template A.

11

Also follow steps 6–9 to sew each Template B and C, adding each section in order. Note, you will also use the 2¾in strips for Template B Sections 4 and 5. You will use the 4½in strips for Template C Sections 4 and 5. Refer carefully to the Layout Diagram, to note which letters are used for each template.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

12

From your remaining print fabrics cut one 2¾in x 9½in strip. Arrange with the Foundation Paper Pieced blocks in four rows, referring to the Layout Diagram for block placement.

13

Sew the blocks together in four rows. Then sew the four rows together to complete the quilt top.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

14

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the three quilt layers together using your preferred basting method.

15

Quilt as desired. Julianna quilted straight lines in a bright green thread, using the seams as a guide to echo the shapes of the blocks. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt to 38in x 36in.

16

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press. 17

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure in place temporarily with pins or binding clips. Hand stitch in place to finish.
