PIECING THE QUILT TOP

5

Take one Fabric A strip and two Fabric J strips. Sew together along the long edges, offsetting each strip from the left edge by 6in (Fig 1). Repeat to make three J/A/J strip sets.

6

Align the 45-degree line of your ruler along one long edge of a strip set and cut away the corners of the strips. Cut three 6½in wide strips from one strip set (Fig 2). Repeat with the other strip sets to make a total of eight J/A/J pieces.

DRAW THE EYE IN BY USING YOUR DARKEST PRINT IN THE CENTRE OF THE QUILT

7

Repeat steps 5– 6 to make the following strip sets, cutting a total of eight pieces from each fabric set:

■ E/J/G.

■ J/H/J.

■ C/J/I.

■ J/D/J.

■ B/J/F.

8

Take one each of the J/A/J, E/J/G and J/H/J strips, and sew together along the diagonal edges to make one Block 1 (Fig 3). Repeat to make a total of eight Block 1. Repeat to make eight Block 2, using the C/J/I, J/D/J and B/J/F strips (Fig 4).

9

Join Block 1 and 2 in pairs, as shown in Fig 5. Carefully orient the blocks to make four of each configuration, exactly as shown.

10

Use a large ruler and rotary cutter to cut each of your Fabric K squares in half on the diagonal, to make a total of eight 17in HSTs and eight 8in HSTs.

11

Sew the HSTs to your blocks as shown in Fig 6, aligning the edges as shown. You will have four blocks in each configuration. Sew the blocks together in pairs, to make the corners of the quilt.

12

Arrange the blocks in two rows of two, referring to the photography, to make the star. Sew together in pairs, then sew the pairs together. Trim the quilt top to 82 in square, trimming evenly from each side to centre the star.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

13

Cut the backing fabric into three approx 90in x WOF pieces. Sew together along the long edges using a 1/2 in seam, pressing the seam open. Trim to approx 90in square.

14

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

15

Quilt as desired. Art Gallery Fabrics quilted straight lines horizontally across the quilt, approx in apart. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

16

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

17

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
