MAKING THE HST UNITS

6

Place a Fabric A and background square RST. Draw two diagonal lines on the wrong side of the background square. Sew ¼in either side of the drawn line (Fig 1).

7

Cut the sewn squares in half vertically and horizontally, then cut along the marked lines. Press each unit open and neatly trim to 4½in square to make a total of eight HST units (Fig 2).

8

Repeat the process in steps 6–7, pairing each square with a background square to make a total of:

■ Sixteen (16) Fabric A HSTs.

■ Forty eight (48) Fabric B HSTs.

■ Thirty two (32) Fabric C HSTs.

■ Sixteen (16) Fabric D HSTs.

■ Thirty two (32) Fabric E HSTs.

ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

9

Arrange the HSTs in six rows of six units, as shown in Fig 3. Sew together in rows, pressing seams in opposite

directions between rows. Sew the rows together, carefully nesting seams to complete one block. Repeat to make a total of four blocks.

10

Arrange the blocks in a four-patch and sew together, matching seams.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

11

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a in seam. Press the seam open.

12

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

13

Quilt as desired. Cait quilted a geometric pattern to echo the piecing. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

14

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, WST, and press.

15

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure in place temporarily with pins or binding clips. Hand or machine stitch in place to finish.
