PIECING THE HSTS

8 Follow the process in step 17 of the quilt instructions to make the following HSTs. Trim each HST unit to 31/4in square.

■ Twenty four Fabric A/C.

■ Twenty four Fabric A/D.

■ Twenty five Fabric A/E.

■ Twenty five Fabric A/F.

MAKING THE CUSHION TOP AND BACKING

9 Arrange the HSTs in seven rows of seven for each cushion top, referring to the Cushion Layout Diagram for placement. Sew the units together in rows, then sew the rows together.

10 Make a quilt sandwich, layering each lining square with a batting square and cushion top. Baste the layers in place and then quilt the cushion top as desired.

11 Layer each of the four 15in x 25in lining rectangles with a batting rectangle as well as a backing piece. Then baste and quilt each backing piece as desired.

12 Trim away any excess batting and lining fabrics from each of the cushion tops and backing pieces. Square up the cushion tops to 193/4in square, and each lining piece to 11in x 193/4in.

13 Press a trim piece in half lengthwise,

wrong sides together. Align the raw

edges with one long edge of a backing piece and sew in place. Fold the trim to the back and stitch in place by hand or machine, as preferred. Trim away any excess at the edges. Repeat to bind one edge of each backing piece.

ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION

14 Place one cushion top right side up. Lay one backing piece right side down, aligning the raw edges at the top and sides. Place the second backing piece right side down, aligning the raw edges at the sides and bottom. Pin or clip in place.

15 Sew all the way around the outer edge using a 1/4in seam allowance, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Use a machine zigzag stitch around the edge, within the seam allowance to prevent fraying. Turn right side out and press to finish the cushion.

16 Repeat steps 14–15 with the other cushion front and back pieces to complete the second cushion.
