ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP

-

Arrange the pieces for the quilt,

10

referring to Fig 1 for placement. Assemble the pieces, working one column at a time. Join the Drunkard’s Path units in pairs. Then join any adjacent pieces to make the units the width of the column, before joining the units into columns.

Sew the columns together, taking 11

care to match the seams between the Drunkard’s Path units.

QUILTING AND FINISHING

Cut the backing fabric in half across 12

the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a 1/2in seam. Press the seam open.

Press the quilt top and backing well. 13

Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

Quilt as desired. Bay quilted vertical 14

straight lines and rainbow motifs using Aurifil 50wt in matching rainbow colours for her top thread and 40wt in white in her bobbin. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

To make the rounded corners, place 15

Template A at a corner of the quilt. Trace the curve and trim (Fig C). Repeat this process for each corner.

Sew all of your 21/4in wide binding strips 16

together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open and trim away the dog ears. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press along the full length of the combined strip.

Sew the joined binding strip to the 17

right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt and secure temporarily with pins or binding clips, as preferred. Hand or machine stitch in place around the edge to finish the quilt.
