PIECING THE QUILT

7 The HSTs are made using the four-at-atime HST method. Begin with one Fabric A and B 71/2in square. Place them with RST and sew all the way around the outer edge, using a 1/4in seam allowance (Fig 1).

8 Cut the sewn pair along both diagonals, to make four triangles. Press each unit open, and trim the HSTs to 43/4in square (Fig 2).

9

Repeat the process in steps 8–9

to make the following HSTs.

■ Fabrics A/B: twelve (12) HSTs.

■ Fabrics A/C: forty four (44) HSTs.

■ Fabrics A/D: thirty six (36) HSTs.

■ Fabrics A/E: sixteen (16) HSTs.

■ Fabrics B/C: twenty eight (28) HSTs.

■ Fabrics B/D: twenty (20) HSTs.

■ Fabrics B/E: thirty two (32) HSTs.

■ Fabrics D/E: sixteen (16) HSTs.

10

Arrange the HSTs with the remaining solid 43/4in squares, in fifteen rows of fifteen, referring to the Layout Diagram. Note, you will have two extra Fabric A/C HSTs. Save for another project, or discard.

11

Sew the squares together in rows, then sew the rows together to complete the quilt top. Take care to match the seams as you sew the rows together.

QUILTING AND FINISHING 12

Cut the backing fabric in half across the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a 1/2in seam. Then press the seam open.

13

Press the quilt top and backing well. Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.

14

Quilt as desired. Daisi quilted straight vertical lines spaced by 1/2in with Mettler Silk Finish Cotton thread in shade 9857. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.

15

Sew the binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.

16

Sew the binding to the right side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place to finish.
