MAKING THE FLYING GEESE (FOUR-AT-A-TIME)
11 Take four Fabric A 17/ 8in squares
and mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each one. Place two squares RST with a Fabric B 3¼in square, in opposite
corners (Fig A). Sew ¼in from either side of the line, as shown in Fig B. Cut into two units along the marked line (Fig C).
12 Press the small triangles away from
the larger one on each unit (Fig D). Place one of the Fabric A squares in the remaining corner of each of the two units, lining up the edges. Sew ¼in from the line on each unit (Fig E).
13 Cut along the line on each unit, as
shown in Fig F. Press each unit to make four Flying Geese units (Fig G). Trim each Flying Geese unit to 11/2in x 21/2in.
14 Repeat the process detailed in steps
11–13 to make a total of one hundred and twelve Flying Geese units.
ASSEMBLING THE SNOW GLOBES
15 Arrange one Fabric A 81/2in x 5in piece,
four Flying Geese and one Fabric B 81/2in x 3in piece as shown in Fig H. Sew the Flying Geese units into a row, then sew the rectangles to the top and the bottom (Fig I). Press seams away from the row of Flying Geese units.
16 Take four background fabric 2in squares
and draw a diagonal line on the wrong side. Place in the corners of the assembled globe RST, with the lines going across the corners. Sew along the marked line, trim ¼in from the line and press the triangles open to complete the globe (Fig J and K).
17 Repeat steps 15–16 to make a total
of twenty eight globe units.
ASSEMBLING THE STANDS
18 Take one Fabric H 1½in x 6½in strip.
With the strip right side up, measure 1in from the top left corner, along the length of the strip. Draw a line from this point to the bottom left corner. Repeat this process on the right side, measuring 1in from the top right corner.
19 Take two background 1½in x 1in strips,
and draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of them (Fig L). Place these rectangles RST with the marked strip from step 18, matching the drawn lines at each end, as shown in Fig M.
20 Sew along the marked line at each
end of the strip. Trim ¼in from the seam and press open, as shown in Fig N. Sew a matching 1½in x 6½in strip to the bottom, as shown in Fig O.
21 Join a 2½in x 1½in background strip
to either end of the pieced unit from step 20 to complete the stand strip.
22 Repeat steps 18–21 with the
remaining 1½in x 6½in coloured strips. You will have two Fabric C, three each of Fabrics D and I and five each of Fabrics E, F, G and H.
ASSEMBLING THE BLOCK
23 Join a stand to the bottom of each
globe unit. Then add a background 2½in x 10½in strip to each side.
24 Join a background 12½in x 1½in strip
to the top and bottom of each globe, for a total of twenty eight blocks.
ASSEMBLING THE QUILT TOP
25 Arrange the blocks in five columns,
referring to the photography for placement. Each of the outer columns and the centre column will have six blocks.
The remaining two columns will each have a total of five blocks.
26 Sew all the blocks together in
columns. Then sew a 6½in x 12½in background piece to the top and bottom of each of the shorter columns. Now the columns will all be the same length.
27 Sew the columns together, pressing
seams open or to one side (as preferred) to complete the quilt top.
QUILTING AND FINISHING
28 Cut the backing fabric in half across
the width. Remove the selvedges and sew the two pieces together using a ½in seam. Press the seam open.
29 Press the quilt top and backing well.
Make a quilt sandwich by placing the backing fabric right side down, the batting on top, then place the quilt top centrally and right side up. Baste the layers together using your preferred method.
30 Quilt as desired. Susan Dieringer
quilted using a Christmas themed pantograph on her longarm machine. Trim off the excess batting and backing fabric and square up the quilt.
31 Sew the binding strips together
end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Fold in half lengthways, wrong sides together, and press.
32 Sew the binding to the right
side of the quilt, creating a neat mitre at each corner. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place around the edges to finish.
