MAKING THE FLYING GEESE (FOUR-AT-A-TIME)
6 Follow the process in steps 11–13 of
the quilt instructions, using the Fabric A 13/ 8in squares and Fabric B 21/4in square to make a total of twenty eight Flying Geese. Trim each unit to 1in x 1½in.
ASSEMBLING THE GLOBES
7 Take one Fabric A 4½in x 2¾in piece,
four Flying Geese blocks and one Fabric B 4½in x 1¾in piece. Join them together as in step 15 of the quilt instructions. Use the 11/4in background squares to finish the corners, following the process in step 16. Repeat this process to make a total of seven globes.
ASSEMBLING THE BLOCKS
8 Follow steps 18–20 of the quilt
instructions to make the stands, using the Fabric C, D, E, F, G, H and I 1in x 3½in
strips and background 1in x ¾in pieces, and measuring ½in from the corners in step 18 to make seven stands.
9 Add a background 1½in x 1in strip to either end of each stand. Sew a globe unit to the top of each stand. Sew a background 5½in x 1½in strip to each side, then sew a 1in x 6½in strip to the top and to the bottom.
ASSEMBLING THE CUSHION TOP
10 Arrange the blocks in columns, referring to the photography for the correct block placement. The outer columns will have two blocks, and the centre column will have three.
11 Sew the blocks together in columns. Then join a background 6½in x 3½in piece to the top and bottom of the outer columns. Sew the three columns together to complete the cushion top.
QUILTING AND FINISHING
12 Place the cushion top right side up on top of your batting and baste in place. Quilt as desired. Jennifer quilted a simple cross-hatch. Trim away excess batting and then square up the cushion top.
13 Take one backing piece and press under ½in. Repeat to enclose the raw edge, then topstitch in place. Repeat this process on the other backing piece.
14 With the quilted cushion top right side up, place the backing pieces on top, both right side down. Align the raw edges at the sides, top and bottom, with the hemmed edges overlapping in the centre. Pin or clip in place. Sew around the outer edge. Finish the seam allowance with a zigzag stitch or serger. Clip the corners and turn right side out to finish.
15 Sew around the outer edge. Finish the seam allowance with a zigzag stitch or serger. Clip the corners and turn right side out to finish.
