Mac Format

Have your say about Apple issues

-

The section of the mag where you get the chance to speak your mind on everything Apple-related

I received my first issue of MacFormat four hours ago, and it’s just what I needed. I started on a Mac in 1987, moved to Windows until my machine died in January and decided that learning to use a Mac was preferable to learning Windows 8. Good move. I am fairly IT-literate and always subscribed to a Windows mag, and was delighted to find yours contains the same useful/informative mix.

I read with interest the item on connecting to the internet and have found out something that not everyone may know. From day one, I’ve had constant problems with my iMac connecting, so you can imagine I was not impressed. After a couple of calls to Apple in my 90-day support period, they suggested I call my provider. Very quickly after doing so I was told iMacs can have a problem using channel 11 and that I should change. I was on 11 because I had found it to be under-used in my area (I use inSSIDer) and I therefore moved to a lower channel and now have few problems. Congestion may just be something we have to live with, but at least I can get on. Are you aware of any way to tweak the system so it can use the higher channels? Bryn Jones Matt Bolton says: We’re not convinced by the claim that this is a known problem with iMacs and channel 11. It’s odd since, if you use OS X’s built-in Wi-Fi internet sharing option, it actually defaults to channel 11! There can be interference from non-Wi-Fi products, though, which inSSIDer wouldn’t identify. Apple explains more on the topic on its site (bit.ly/1kjppeh). It’s always good to know about Wi-Fi channels, in case you have a problem such as Bryn’s!
