Use Tor

Install Onion Browser (69p from the 1 App Store), tap to launch it and allow it to connect to the Tor network. The initial connection will take up to a minute.

‘Spoofing’ your IP address

Once your iPad is connected to 2 check.torproject.com you’ll get a message confirming that your web surfing is now being routed through it. You’ll see a message showing the IP (internet protocol) address that your iPad now pretends to be using – called spoofing.

Use anonymous search

You can now explore the web 3 using Onion Browser. The browser works well with the DuckDuckGo (duckduckgo.com) search engine, which prides itself on its lack of tracking – great for an anonymous web search.

Unstick Onion Browser

Sometimes, typing in a web address 4 in Onion Browser has no effect. This is because it occasional­ly conflicts with dormant apps in iOS. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the browser screen to bring up its menu, then tap Help/Support and click the force-quit link. Then launch Onion again to start a new session.

Get a new IP identity

You don’t need to be Julian Assange 5 to be worried about who can track you down. If you think your cover might be blown, tap the arrow at the bottom of Onion Browser, then tap New Identity in the menu that appears. A new IP address will be generated for you.

Bookmark useful pages

Because Onion Browser doesn’t save 6 your web history, you need to type in the complete URL of any website you want to visit, each time you go there. It’s not entirely lacking in functional­ity, however: you can still bookmark useful sites in the usual way by tapping the menu arrow at the bottom of the page and then Bookmark Current Page. To view these Onion bookmarks, tap the book icon at the bottom right of the page.
