Okay, let’s try explaining this: Yomi is a fighting game, except you use cards instead of button combos to fight. The fights occur in turns, starting with both players laying a card simultaneously. A combination of rock-paperscissors-style attack types determines who the winner is, and they then get to lay other cards to build up combos and inflict as much damage as possible – though this needs to be balanced with having cards in your deck. Each card has two different attack types on it, depending on which way up you lay it, as well as a combo counter and other special abilities. Basically, it’s extremely complicated. It can be great fun, and the range of possibilities combined with different play options mean there’s loads of game here, but with the tutorial as the only rules reference, you’ll be floundering a lot at first. It’s interesting more than it is essential. Matt Bolton An interesting game, but one that isn’t entirely fun enough for the time investment involved.
