Cinamatic

A Hipstamatic for Vine! Yes, that’s a real sentence

Works with iPhone, iPod touch Version 1.0.2 Age 4+

Short video services with a social bent (Vine, Instagram video and so on) are really starting to gain traction, so it was inevitable that retro-photo favourite Hipstamatic would think about getting in on the act, bringing its brand of lo-fi effects to square videos that last 15 seconds or less. And Cinamatic is almost exactly that.

The app is very different to Hipstamatic’s analogue-influenced interface, bearing more resemblance to Vine’s app – hold the record button to start videoing, and let go to stop, stringing multiple presses into a single video. A counter lets you know how long your video is, so you can keep it under seven seconds for Vine, or let it go to a maximum of 15 for Instagram video or Facebook (these are the only three online sharing options).

There’s a slight delay on the record button that makes finesse difficult, but otherwise, it’s a simple, very wellthought-out system.

But, it’s just not as comprehensive an app as Hipstamatic. You get just a few filters for your initial outlay, but there’s nothing like the system of lenses to combine them with, so the looks are quite limited.

The filters are generally nice enough, and mostly very clever – crucially, they’re not just a simple, static image adjustment, but all have animations of the their own. This at least gives Cinamatic something different, but for us, it lacks the freedom and range we expect from Hipstamatic. Matt Bolton Very nicely made, with some cool motion filters, but there’s a lot less here than we hoped for.

Funky animated filters

Very easy to use

Small range of filters

No lenses or other tweaks
