Minimalism that draws the eye

1Writer stands out among the distraction-free Markdown/text editors on the App Store. The basics are all here, but 1Writer goes further than most. It is visually stripped back, but it has theme options, a dark mode and enables line height and font size changes.

You can link documents in local searches using hashtags. There’s also a Today view widget to get at recent edits.

The really clever feature is JavaScript actions that extend the app. On adding an action you can manipulate text, jump to document sections, and send content to a service, all with one tap. More than 30 actions are available, and you can write your own.

The app rarely stumbles, but there are two doozies. Misspellings are flagged with a strikethrough but ignored if you continue typing. The extra keyboard items feel arbitrarily grouped, and the bar uses too much space. Craig Grannell
