Can I back up Keychain?
I’ve had a lingering iCloud Keychain authentication issue since moving from the betas to final iOS 8. I had to wait until my tax return was filed to ensure I wouldn’t lose vital passwords by resetting my keychain. Since doing that I have indeed lost some website logins stored in iCloud. How do you keep an up-to-date copy of all of your keychain data to restore later? Stuff stored in iCloud couldn’t be exported from Keychain Access on my Mac. Janette Stone iCloud Keychain is designed for syncing passwords between devices, rather than backing them up. It automatically and silently syncs passwords to approved devices. As you’ve found, that keychain can’t be backed up easily from your Mac. Copying passwords back out of Keychain Access has to be done one at a time – time consuming if you have many of them. You could write an AppleScript to automate this. Alternatives such as 1Password, while offering poorer integration with iOS, enable you to keep traditional local backups of your keychain.
