£14.99 Developer MP Digital, macplay.com Requires OS X 10.7 or higher

The premise of this curious-looking game is that you’re the avatar in a digital realm, the in-universe designers of which have left unfinished. It looks like the sort of rough sketches that form in your mind’s eye when reading fantasy and science fiction novels in childhood, with the eerie illustrated style just crying out for exploration.

With the game world being ostensibly incomplete, there are no set rules for overcoming its puzzles with firmly prescribed solutions. This gives you the opportunity to get creative, uncovering mechanics that the in-game development team abandoned. The behaviour of objects and creatures that inhabit the world can be manipulated to rewrite the game’s logic from within – a concept that struck a chord with our Tron- loving inner child.

The Magic Circle is awash with intrigue that few games manage. It’s been available on Windows for a while, where it met with critical acclaim, including a favourable comparison to Valve‘s bona fide classic Portal 2 for the wild journey of discovery it takes you on.
