Strange letters and symbols appear on my iPhone for no reason. He suggested dust or vibrations as the cause (I work in a site office). Is this possible? Adele Hastings

If the dust or vibration were bad enough to affect your iPhone, it wouldn’t magically recover once you got home. I think this is much more likely to be the electricity supply at work. Are you using the phone during charging? If your portacabin is powered from a diesel generator, or you have heavy equipment connected to the same supply, the electricity may have lots of spikes and dips in the voltage – I’ve seen this cause rogue characters. Normally, the culprit is a faulty charging plug (cheap ones omit a lot of the filtering and smoothing circuitry of Apple’s) but it could easily be the office wiring too. The simplest solution is to try an external battery and use that during the day.
